Switch Emulator on Windows PC: Eden, Citron Neo and Ryubing Setup Guide (October 2026)
Key points
- As of October 2026, Eden is the default pick on Windows (stable v0.2.1, nightlies still shipping). Citron Neo is the backup; Ryubing is stable but maintenance-only.
- Switch emulation is CPU-bound. Eden's minimum is an i5-4430 or Ryzen 3 1200, 8GB of RAM (12GB on laptops) and a Vulkan 1.1 GPU.
- Use Vulkan. Ryubing's docs recommend 2x resolution on a 1080p screen. Leave everything else at default first.
- Eden installs updates and DLC with File > Install Files to NAND. Ryubing mounts them directly instead.

As of October 2026, the best way to play Switch games on a Windows PC is Eden. It is the most active Switch emulator right now: the stable release is v0.2.1 (2026-06-01) and nightly builds kept coming through October. Your backups are Citron Neo, which took over after the original Citron shut down, and Ryubing, the community continuation of Ryujinx, now in maintenance mode. Setup is the same for all three: install, add keys and firmware dumped from your own console, point it at your games folder, map a controller, then adjust graphics if needed.
Pick an emulator
| Emulator | Lineage | Version (as of 2026-10-30) | Status | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eden | yuzu | Stable v0.2.1 (2026-06-01), nightly 2026-10-18 | Active, commits almost daily | Most people |
| Citron Neo | yuzu (successor to Citron) | Stable 2026-04-27, Windows nightly 2026-10-25 | Active, Vulkan-only | A second try when a game breaks in Eden |
| Ryubing | Ryujinx | Stable 1.3.3 (2025-10-11), Canary 1.3.351 (2026-08-26) | Maintenance-only since Feb 2026 | Long-time Ryujinx users |
The official sites are eden-emu.dev, citron-neo.org and ryujinx.app (Ryubing still calls itself Ryujinx). Sites such as ryubing.org or edenemulators.com are not official; read how to spot fake emulator sites before you download anything. For a deeper comparison, see Eden vs Citron Neo vs Ryubing.
System requirements
Switch emulation on a PC leans on the CPU, especially single-thread speed. Eden's docs say x86 machines are "almost always limited by the CPU" and recommend at least 6 threads and FMA support. Eden's official table:
| Tier | Desktop CPU | Laptop CPU | GPU | RAM |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum (Windows) | i5-4430 / Ryzen 3 1200 | i5-8265U / Ryzen 3 2300U | GTX 1050 4GB / RX 550 4GB / UHD 620 | 8GB (12GB laptop) |
| Recommended | i5-11400 / Ryzen 5 3600 | i5-13420H / Ryzen 7 5700U | GTX 1660 6GB / RX 5500 8GB / Iris Xe / Radeon 680M | 16GB |
| Optimal | i9-13900K / Ryzen 7 7800X3D | Core Ultra 7 265H / Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 | RTX 3060 12GB / RX 6700 10GB | 32GB |
A few notes:
- Eden needs Vulkan 1.1 or OpenGL 4.6. Ryubing needs Vulkan 1.2 or OpenGL 4.5 and Windows 10 1803 or newer.
- Intel integrated graphics must be 6th gen or newer; 5th gen and older lack the Vulkan features required (Ryubing FAQ). Integrated GPUs borrow system RAM, so iGPU laptops need more memory.
- Eden supports only Windows 10 and 11. There is an arm64 build for Snapdragon X laptops, but Eden calls it "very experimental and unlikely to work at all."
Full tiers are in hardware requirements.
Install Eden
- Install the latest Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. Eden will not launch without it.
- Go to the official site and download the Stable or Nightly build. Most people should use Stable. Build variants are explained below.
- Extract it anywhere you like. For a fully portable setup, create a folder named
usernext to the program. - Run
eden.exe. If SmartScreen appears, click More info, then Run anyway. - Eden warns that decryption keys are missing. Click OK.
- Open Tools > Install Decryption Keys and select your prod.keys (you can pick only one file).
- Open Tools > Install Firmware and choose From Folder or From ZIP.
- Double-click the empty main window to add your games folder.
- Open Emulation > Configure > Input to map your controller.
- Double-click a game to play.
Which Eden build to pick
| Build | Use it for |
|---|---|
| PGO | Recommended for everyone; usually 10–30% faster than the standard build |
| amd64 v3 | Ryzen or Intel 4th gen (Haswell) and newer |
| Zen 4 | AMD Zen 4 and newer (ROG Ally X, Legion Go S). Does not work on Intel |
| MSVC | Try it if other builds show graphics bugs; Eden cites Pokémon Scarlet and Violet |
| arm64 | Snapdragon laptops, experimental |
Keys and firmware: what you need and where it goes
- Where they come from: prod.keys, title.keys, firmware and game files are dumped from a Switch console. For what each file does, read keys and firmware explained.
- What is required: prod.keys is required, title.keys is optional, and most games need firmware.
- Keep them in sync: Ryubing's docs say prod.keys must be at least as new as the firmware you install, or you get a firmware parsing error.
- Eden and Citron Neo: install both through the menus (steps 6 and 7 above). Eden stores data in the eden folder under
%AppData%, or in theuserfolder for portable setups. - Ryubing: open File > Open Ryujinx Folder, go into
system, drop in prod.keys (and title.keys), then restart. Install firmware with Tools > Install Firmware > Install from XCI/ZIP; the bottom-right corner then shows the System Version. - Firmware version: Eden v0.2.0 lists 22.0 firmware compatibility. As of October 2026, there is no official statement on 23.x support.
How Ryubing and Citron Neo differ
Ryubing
- Extract the contents of the
publishfolder somewhere you own. Avoid the desktop, a drive root and Program Files; protected folders cause permission errors and deleted files. - For a portable setup, create a
portablesubfolder next to the program. - Add games under Options > Settings > User Interface > Game Directories > Add > Save.
- Ryubing checks for updates at launch. Don't update while a game or the settings window is open, or files may turn into
.ryuold.
Citron Neo is Vulkan-only, and builds from 2026-03-27 onward run in portable mode by default (using a user folder). The flow matches Eden: keys, firmware, game folder. Menu names may differ slightly, so follow what you see. The "minimum specs" in its FAQ are half a joke; use Eden's table instead.
Graphics settings
Both projects say to start with the defaults. Ryubing calls default settings plus Vulkan optimal; Eden says it tries to make every game boot on stock settings.
| Setting | Recommended | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Graphics API | Vulkan | Always Vulkan on AMD and Intel. NVIDIA should also prefer Vulkan, with OpenGL as a fallback |
| Resolution scale | 2x on 1080p, 1x on weak PCs | 2x is Ryubing's recommendation; 4x is "overkill for nearly every setup" and can run out of VRAM |
| Shader cache | On | In Eden, "Use persistent cache" and "Use Vulkan pipeline cache" are separate toggles. Turn on both |
| Async shaders | Optional in Eden | Less stutter, possible glitches. Ryubing has no async option and does not plan one |
| ASTC decoding (Eden) | GPU | CPU is slow but safe; CPU Async avoids stutter but may glitch |
| Anisotropic filtering | Default or 4x–16x | Eden's docs warn that turning it off breaks many games |
| Scaling filter | FSR or Area | FSR for upscaling; Area when internal resolution is above your screen |
| PPTC (Ryubing) | On (default) | After two launches, load times drop from the third launch on |
Shader stutter is on-the-spot compilation the first time a scene appears, and it fades as you play. More tuning tips are in performance settings.
Keep GPU drivers current. On dual-GPU laptops, update both drivers from the vendors' sites; updating only one causes "no GPU meets the minimum requirements" errors. If NVIDIA shows a black screen with audio, reset the global settings in the NVIDIA Control Panel. If the AMD window turns see-through, turn off global sharpening in the Radeon software.
Controllers
- Eden: Emulation > Configure > Controls. Most controllers work out of the box. Click New to save a profile; right-click a game > Properties > Input Profiles to assign one per game.
- Ryubing: Options > Settings > Input. First decide on "Enable Docked Mode": checked means you configure Player 1, unchecked means Handheld. Pick your controller and click Load for the default mapping. The docs suggest a stick deadzone of at least 0.20 against drift. DS4 and DS5 work natively; don't run DS4Windows on top.
- If Steam is open, it may grab your controller. If buttons act strangely, close Steam or turn off its controller configuration.
Updates and DLC
- Eden: File > Install Files to NAND... lets you pick several files at once. After the check, click Install; the Add-Ons column shows what's installed. To disable an item, right-click the game > Configure Game and untick it; it then shows [D].
- Ryubing: nothing goes into NAND; files are mounted. Right-click a game > Manage Title Updates > Add, select the version, Save. DLC uses Manage DLC. You can also set an update/DLC folder in settings for automatic loading.
- Never launch an update file as if it were the base game; you'll get errors such as Could not find Main NCA.
Where saves live
- Eden: right-click a game > Open Save Data Location. Before importing a save, boot the game once in Eden and save, so the folder exists, then copy your files in.
- Ryubing: right-click a game > Open User Save Directory for most games, or Open Device Save Directory for the few that use system saves (Animal Crossing, for example). All saves sit in
%AppData%\Ryujinx\bis\user\save\, numbered rather than named by game ID. Deleting a user profile also deletes its saves.
Saves work across emulators and devices; Ryubing's FAQ says copy and paste is enough. Power cuts and blue screens can corrupt a save that is being written, so back up often.
Where mods and cheats go
| Emulator | Mod folder | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Eden | Right-click game > Open Mod Data Location (load\<Title ID>\ in the data folder) | One subfolder per mod containing exefs / romfs; restart, then tick it under Configure Game > Add-Ons |
| Eden (emulated SD card) | %AppData%\eden\sdmc | sd:/ paths in mod instructions map here; framework mods such as those for Smash follow the framework's own steps |
| Ryubing | Right-click game > Manage Mods > Add, then pick the extracted mod folder | Manual path: %AppData%\Ryujinx\mods\contents\<Title ID>\<mod name>\ |
Cheats are tied to a game version and stop working after an update. Eden enables cheats by default; Ryubing disables them until you tick them in Manage Cheats. Pressing F1 to uncap the frame rate speeds most games up; for normal-speed 60 fps you need a game-specific 60 fps mod.
Suggested setups by PC tier
| Tier | Emulator | Resolution | Other |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry (8th-gen i5 / Ryzen 3 2300U, GTX 1050 or Iris Xe) | Eden PGO | 1x | Shader cache on; dual-channel RAM on iGPU machines |
| Mainstream (Ryzen 5 3600 / i5-11400, GTX 1660 to RTX 3060) | Eden PGO or Ryubing | 2x on 1080p | Anisotropic 4x–16x, AA as needed |
| High end (7800X3D / 13900K, RTX 3060 12GB or better) | Any | 2x–3x | 60 fps mods are fine; turn on texture recompression in Ryubing if VRAM runs short |

FAQ
Eden won't open or crashes instantly on Windows. What do I do?
Install the latest Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable and reboot. Eden's docs say it will not even launch without it. If it still fails, update your GPU drivers. On laptops with two GPUs, update both drivers from the vendors' sites.
Which is better on PC: Eden, Citron Neo or Ryubing?
As of October 2026, Eden suits most people: it updates the most and ships the most builds. Citron Neo is Vulkan-only and a good second option when a game misbehaves in Eden. Ryubing has been maintenance-only since February 2026; its stable release is still 1.3.3 from 2025-10-11.
Where do prod.keys and firmware go?
In Eden you don't need to find a folder: use Tools > Install Decryption Keys for prod.keys and Tools > Install Firmware for the firmware. In Ryubing, open File > Open Ryujinx Folder, put prod.keys in the system subfolder and restart, then install firmware from Tools > Install Firmware.
Why doesn't lowering the resolution make games smoother?
On PCs, Switch emulation is almost always CPU-bound. Eden's docs give the example of a Zen 5 plus RX 6600 system maxing out the CPU before the GPU reaches 70%. Lower resolution only helps when the GPU is the bottleneck. Check that you use Vulkan, a PGO build and the shader cache.
Is Eden v0.2.2 real?
As of 2026-10-30, Eden's official releases and tags have no v0.2.2. The latest stable release is v0.2.1 from 2026-06-01, followed by nightlies. Pages advertising v0.2.2 are usually third-party lookalike sites; stick to eden-emu.dev.
