Eden vs Citron Neo vs Ryubing: Which Switch Emulator Should You Use in 2026?
Key points
- Most people should use Eden: it is updated the most (nightly 2026-10-18), covers the most platforms and has the most mature Android build.
- Citron Neo is Vulkan-only and built around its new Dynarmic-GPLv3 CPU backend. It works best as a second emulator to compare against.
- Ryubing carries on Ryujinx's accuracy-first approach, has the best documentation and is the most stable on Mac, but it is maintenance-only since February 2026.
- Eden and Citron Neo are yuzu-family (C++); Ryubing is Ryujinx-family (C#). Save files work across all three.
- Only Eden and Citron Neo have official Android builds. On the Ryujinx side, Android is Kenji-NX and iOS is MeloNX.

As of October 2026, most people should use Eden: it is updated the most, runs on the most platforms and has the most mature Android build. Citron Neo works best as your second emulator, for when a specific game misbehaves in Eden. Ryubing suits people who want stability with minimal tweaking, and Mac users, but it has been maintenance-only since February 2026 and won't get big new features.

Lineage: two yuzu forks and one Ryujinx fork
Eden and Citron Neo both descend from yuzu. After yuzu closed, a fork called uzuy appeared and was renamed Citron in October 2024. In 2025 the Citron team split over DRM and telemetry plans and donation handling, and the people who left started Eden on 2025-05-10. Eden was started by Camille LaVey, and Emulation General Wiki says its team came from Citron and Sudachi. The original Citron ended on 2026-02-16 because of internal conflict and a developer being doxxed, not because of Nintendo. Citron Neo picked up that line in March 2026; its team has not named its members.
Ryubing comes from Ryujinx. After Ryujinx stopped on 2024-10-01, GreemDev forked it and renamed it Ryubing in early 2025. GreemDev stepped away in February 2026 and LotP and others now maintain it. In his words: "This is not a phoenix project, this is a maintenance project."
The two families do not share code, but they do share save files. Ryubing's docs say saves are compatible across every Switch device and emulator.
Update pace: the biggest difference
| Emulator | 2026 release cadence |
|---|---|
| Eden | v0.2.0 (2026-05-13, first-anniversary release), v0.2.1 (2026-06-01); nightlies through 2026-10-18. Boiling Steam said in October there are commits "almost every day" |
| Citron Neo | Stable builds on 2026-03-20, 03-27, 04-17 and 04-27; since then only nightlies, with Android and macOS builds up to 2026-10-26 |
| Ryubing | Stable is still 1.3.3 from 2025-10-11; Canary reached 1.3.351 on 2026-08-26, then nothing |
In practice, fixes for newly released games will mostly show up in Eden. Eden v0.2.0 got Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream to boot, and Citron Neo's 2026-04-27 build fixed that game's grass rendering. Ryubing 1.3.3 stops at Tears of the Kingdom 1.4.x and Breath of the Wild 1.8.x support.
Graphics backends and shaders
- Eden: Vulkan first, OpenGL 4.6 as fallback. It has an async shader option that can cut stutter but may cause glitches. The disk shader cache and the Vulkan pipeline cache are separate toggles; keep both on.
- Citron Neo: Vulkan only; the team says OpenGL isn't needed. Its first stable build on 2026-03-20 brought a new GPU decoder that it says compiles shaders faster. The 03-27 build invalidated all old shader caches, so expect one round of stutter after updating.
- Ryubing: both Vulkan and OpenGL. The docs say use Vulkan whenever you can, and always on AMD and Intel. Ryubing deliberately does not do async shaders, because they cause graphics errors and don't fully remove stutter. The shader cache is on by default and should stay on.
How to use each setting is covered in performance and graphics settings.
Performance focus
| Eden | Citron Neo | Ryubing | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Philosophy | Lots of knobs: CPU overclock, GPU clocks, Unsafe CPU accuracy, per-game tuning | Lean: "make the games that already work run better" | Accuracy first; Ryujinx never did per-game hacks |
| Speed tools | PGO builds; dedicated Zen 4 and Steam Deck builds; NCE on Android | Dynarmic-GPLv3, which the team says cuts CPU latency, speeds loading and reduces stutter in CPU-heavy areas | PPTC: after two launches, loading gets much faster from the third; Hypervisor on Apple Silicon |
| Where it shines | Linux beats Windows; strong on Android | Desktop | Apple Silicon Mac |
On PC, Switch emulation is mostly CPU-bound for all three. Which one runs a given game faster depends on the game, and there is no reliable cross-emulator benchmark yet. Test on your own machine.
Android support
| Eden | Citron Neo | Ryubing | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Official Android build | Yes | Yes (nightly) | No |
| APK variants | Standard, Legacy (Snapdragon 865 and similar), a Genshin Impact spoof build for vendor performance modes, ChromeOS | A dedicated Snapdragon 8 Elite build | — |
| GPU driver management | Built in; fetches Turnip online; per-game driver choice | Not documented | — |
| Risk | Eden's docs say it is not on the Play Store or F-Droid; get it from the official site | Its March notes said Android support was "on the line" | The Ryujinx-family Android build, Kenji-NX, slowed after 2.1.0-pr.2 (2026-02-13); downloads are limited |
On Android it is essentially Eden first, Citron Neo second. For driver choices, see Turnip drivers.
Other differences
- Controllers and peripherals: Emulation General Wiki's comparison shows Eden supports direct dual Joy-Con, Pro Controller, the Joy-Con IR camera, Ring-Con and USB GameCube adapters. Ryubing added virtual dual Joy-Con in 1.3.1; motion for other controllers can go through cemuhook.
- Online play: Eden tunnels local wireless play through "rooms" and ships a standalone room server. Ryubing does LDN play through its own servers and added an LDN room browser in 1.3.3. Neither can connect to Nintendo's online service.
- Docs: Ryubing's docs.ryujinx.app covers setup, mods, cheats and many per-game issues, and is the easiest to search. Eden has a user handbook. Citron Neo has little beyond its README.
- Downloads: Eden's and Ryubing's GitHub pages were both hit by Nintendo DMCA notices in 2026. Both now publish from their own servers; use the official site. Boiling Steam noted in October that Ryubing "seems hard to download, maybe temporarily." Lookalike sites are everywhere; see fake emulator sites.
Who should use which
| Your situation | Pick |
|---|---|
| Beginner on a Windows or Linux PC | Eden |
| Android phone or handheld | Eden, Citron Neo as backup |
| Steam Deck, ROG Ally | Eden (dedicated builds) |
| Apple Silicon Mac | Ryubing |
| You want good defaults and no tweaking | Ryubing |
| A game has problems in Eden | Try Eden's MSVC or nightly build, then Citron Neo and Ryubing |
| Vulkan-only, minimal setup | Citron Neo |
| You want to look things up, including per-game fixes | Ryubing's docs (useful even if you play on Eden) |
Verdict
Eden is the 2026 default. Citron Neo is its best companion, and Ryubing is the stable fallback, especially on Mac. Installing all three and picking per game is perfectly fine; just don't mix shader caches between them, since caches are tied to the emulator version and GPU driver.
Whichever you pick, you need prod.keys and firmware; see keys and firmware explained for what they are. For every platform's picks, see the best Switch emulator in 2026.
FAQ
Eden vs Citron Neo: which is better?
As of October 2026, Eden is the better default. It is updated more often, runs on more platforms, has a more mature Android build and has real documentation. Citron Neo is Vulkan-only and focuses on making already-working games run better, so it is useful when a specific game misbehaves in Eden.
Ryubing vs Eden: which should I pick?
On PC both are fine for beginners. Ryubing's docs say its defaults are already optimal, and its documentation is the most complete. Eden moves faster, has more options and an Android version. Ryubing has been maintenance-only since February 2026, so fixes for new games mostly land in Eden. On Apple Silicon Macs, Ryubing is more stable.
Is Ryubing the same as Ryujinx?
Ryubing is the community continuation of Ryujinx. After Ryujinx stopped on 2024-10-01, GreemDev forked it and renamed it Ryubing in early 2025. Its official site, ryujinx.app, still calls the app Ryujinx.
Can I move saves between Eden, Citron Neo and Ryubing?
Yes. Ryubing's docs say Switch saves are compatible across all Switch devices and emulators; you copy them into the game's save folder. Launch the game once in the new emulator and save first so the folder exists.
Is Citron Neo the same as Citron?
No. The original Citron shut down on 2026-02-16 over internal conflict, and its site and repos went offline. Citron Neo is a successor project that appeared in March 2026; its team has not named its members.
