Turnip Drivers for Android Switch Emulators: What They Are and Which to Use (2026)
Key points
- Turnip is Mesa's open-source Vulkan driver for Qualcomm Adreno GPUs. It works only on Snapdragon phones, needs no root, and is loaded inside the emulator.
- Eden says Adreno 6xx/7xx with Turnip gives the best compatibility; the phone's stock driver is usually faster but less compatible.
- In Eden: Settings → GPU driver manager. Fetch (bottom left) downloads recommended drivers, Install adds a zip, and long-pressing a game sets a per-game driver.
- Turnip is most mature on the 8 Gen 2 and 8 Gen 3. Support for the 8 Elite and 8 Elite Gen 5 (Adreno 8xx) only started in late 2025 and is still experimental.
- Mali, PowerVR and Xclipse GPUs can't use Turnip, so Dimensity and Exynos phones are limited to their stock drivers.

Turnip is Mesa's open-source Vulkan driver for Qualcomm Adreno GPUs. It only works on Snapdragon phones, needs no root, and you load it inside the emulator. As of October 2026, Eden says Adreno 6xx/7xx with Turnip gives the best compatibility, while the stock driver is usually faster but less compatible. Turnip is most mature on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and 8 Gen 3, and still experimental on the 8 Elite family. Phones with Mali or Xclipse GPUs, such as Dimensity and Exynos models, can't use Turnip.
What is Turnip?
| Stock / system driver | Turnip | |
|---|---|---|
| Made by | Qualcomm, shipped by the phone maker | The Mesa open-source project (Freedreno's Vulkan driver) |
| GPUs | Whatever your phone has | Qualcomm Adreno only |
| How to install | Built into the system | Imported in the emulator's driver manager; no root, other apps unaffected |
| Strength | Usually faster on Adreno | Better compatibility, fewer graphics bugs |
| Weakness | Poorer compatibility, more glitches | Different versions behave differently per game |
Emulators swap drivers in-app through the AdrenoTools mechanism, so the driver applies only to that emulator, and you can remove it or go back to the system driver at any time.
Why Snapdragon phones need it
Switch emulators use many Vulkan features, and stock phone drivers don't always handle them well. Eden's docs say:
- Qualcomm Snapdragon has the best support, and Adreno 6xx/7xx with Turnip has the best compatibility.
- The stock driver is faster on Adreno but less compatible.
- Stock-driver support for Adreno 8xx (Snapdragon 8 Elite family) is "in progress."
So the usual approach is Turnip by default, with the system driver for specific games that run better on it. Some Eden features also depend on the driver. "Optimized Vertex Buffers" needs Turnip from Mesa 26.0+ or the Qualcomm driver and crashes on Turnip 25.3 or older, and "Force maximum clocks" only works on Adreno.
How to manage drivers in Eden
| Action | Where |
|---|---|
| Open driver management | Settings (gear, top left) → GPU driver manager |
| Download a recommended driver | Fetch, bottom left of the driver manager |
| Add a driver you already have | Install (or "+") bottom right; pick the zip file itself, don't extract it |
| Activate a driver | Tap it so it's selected |
| Go back to the stock driver | Select System Driver in the list |
| Use a driver for one game only | Long-press the game in your library → set the driver in its per-game settings |
Tips:
- No single version is best for every game. Joey's Retro Handhelds' Eden Android guide notes that the version Fetch recommends can lag behind the driver author's latest, so try both.
- Common driver authors include K11MCH1 (AdrenoToolsDrivers), Mr. Purple Turnip, StevenMXZ and whitebelyash, each publishing on their own GitHub release pages. Get drivers only from the author's original page, not from random re-uploads.
- After switching drivers the shader cache rebuilds, so expect stutter the first time again. That's normal (Eden also fixed the cache-clearing logic on driver switches on 2026-10-01).
Citron Neo hasn't documented whether its Android build has the same driver manager. Kenji-NX's dedicated 8 Gen 3 / 8 Elite Android builds target CPU instruction sets, which is a separate thing from GPU drivers.
Eden settings that interact with the driver
| Setting | How it relates to the driver | Advice |
|---|---|---|
| Optimized Vertex Buffers | Needs Turnip from Mesa 26.0+ or the Qualcomm driver | Turn it off on old Turnip builds |
| Force maximum clocks | Adreno only | Try it when short on frames |
| SGSR / SGSR EdgeDir scaling filter | Qualcomm's upscaler tuned for Adreno; poor on other GPUs | A good upscaling option on Snapdragon |
| GPU Mode (Fast / Accurate) | Not driver-related, but its glitches are often blamed on drivers | For wrong particles, try Accurate before swapping drivers |
| Extended Dynamic State | Higher levels reduce pipeline compiles | Default; lower it if the screen flickers |
How to compare two drivers
Change one thing at a time: same game, same scene, play a stretch on driver A, then switch to driver B. Eden's in-game menu (swipe in from the left edge or press Back) has Overlay options that show performance and device info, so you can watch the frame rate. The first run after a switch stutters while the shader cache rebuilds, so play a while before comparing.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 vs 8 Gen 3 vs 8 Elite
| Chip | GPU | Turnip status (as of 2026-10) | Advice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Snapdragon 865 / 870 | Adreno 650 | Mature 6xx-series Turnip | Use Eden's Legacy APK; Eden's minimum tier |
| Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 | Adreno 730 | Mature 7xx-series Turnip | Eden's recommended tier; use the Turnip Fetch suggests |
| Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 | Adreno 740 | Most mature and stable | Turnip by default, stock driver for specific games |
| Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 | Adreno 750 | Mature; Eden's optimal tier | Same; in late 2025 one outlet flatly advised "keep your 8 Gen 3 if you want to run emulators" |
| Snapdragon 8 Elite | Adreno 830 | Experimental: Adreno 8xx work started in late 2025, Qualcomm's Rob Clark suggested it would also cover the 830, and the community publishes dedicated A8xx builds | Try both the stock driver and an A8xx Turnip build; results vary by game |
| Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 | Adreno 8xx (Gen 8) | Mesa 26.0 merged Adreno Gen 8 Turnip support, but it's still experimental for emulators | Same as 8 Elite |
The 8 Elite family is newer, but Turnip support is still catching up, so a newer chip doesn't guarantee a better emulation experience than an 8 Gen 3. Android Authority's Kenji-NX review found 8 Elite phones get the most out of Kenji-NX, which is another option to try.
Why Mali, PowerVR and Xclipse can't use Turnip
Turnip is written only for Qualcomm Adreno; it does nothing on other GPU architectures. Dimensity uses Arm's Mali / Immortalis, Exynos uses Samsung's Xclipse, and Google Tensor G4 and earlier use Mali. All of them are limited to the vendor's own driver.
| GPU | Turnip? | What Eden says |
|---|---|---|
| Mali (Dimensity, Tensor and others) | No | Generally slow, but Mali-G715 (Tensor G4) and Immortalis-G925 (Dimensity 9400) are "surprisingly good" on Android 16 |
| PowerVR | No | Only DXT-48-1536 is known to work |
| Xclipse (Exynos) | No | Only the newest (such as Xclipse 950) works; Exynos chips from before 2022 are unsupported |
What non-Snapdragon phones can do: update to Android 16 (Eden says Vulkan improved a lot, with some Pixels gaining more than 50%), use a cooler, lower resolution, and lower Extended Dynamic State if the screen flickers (Eden's docs say Mali and PowerVR have issues with EDS3).
Warning: lookalike sites such as edenemulators.com claim Turnip works on Mali. That's false, and that site isn't Eden's official site either. See fake emulator sites.
Troubleshooting Turnip
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Driver import fails | You extracted the zip, or it isn't a driver package | Import the driver zip directly |
| A game won't start after switching drivers | That version doesn't suit the game | Switch back to System Driver, or long-press the game and set a per-game driver |
| Crashes with Optimized Vertex Buffers on | Turnip too old (25.3 or earlier) | Use Turnip from Mesa 26.0+, or turn the option off |
| Turnip fails to load on 8 Elite | Adreno 8xx support is still experimental | Use a dedicated A8xx build, or the stock driver |
| Flickering or wrong colors | Driver compatibility | Compare another Turnip version; for wrong particles, set GPU Mode to Accurate |
| Stutter returns after a driver change | Shader cache rebuilding | Normal; it settles as you play |
| Frame rate drops after a while | Thermal throttling | Use a cooler and the phone's performance mode |

FAQ
What is the Turnip driver?
Turnip is the Vulkan driver for Qualcomm Adreno GPUs in the open-source Mesa graphics project (part of Freedreno). Android Switch emulators can load it in-app in place of the phone's stock driver, without root, to fix graphics bugs and improve compatibility.
Can I use Turnip on a MediaTek Dimensity phone?
No. Turnip only works on Qualcomm Snapdragon's Adreno GPUs. Dimensity uses Mali / Immortalis GPUs and Exynos uses Xclipse, so those phones can only use their stock drivers. Claims that Turnip works on Mali are wrong.
What is the best Turnip driver for Snapdragon 8 Gen 2?
Turnip is most mature on the 8 Gen 2 (Adreno 740) and 8 Gen 3 (Adreno 750). Start with the version Eden's Fetch button recommends, and if a game has problems, try another version or compare with the system driver. No single version is best for every game.
Should I use Turnip or the stock driver on Snapdragon 8 Elite?
Try both. Turnip support for the 8 Elite's Adreno 830 and the 8 Elite Gen 5's Adreno 8xx GPU only started in late 2025, and community A8xx builds are still labeled experimental. Eden also says stock-driver support for Adreno 8xx is still in progress. Which works better depends on the game.
A game won't start after I changed drivers. What do I do?
Go back to GPU driver manager and choose System Driver, or long-press the game and set a driver just for it. Also note that old Turnip builds (25.3 or older) crash with Optimized Vertex Buffers enabled; that option needs Turnip from Mesa 26.0+ or the Qualcomm driver.
