Switch Emulator on Android: Eden, Citron Neo and Kenji-NX Setup, Requirements and Settings (October 2026)

Published Facts checked 2026-10-307 min read

Key points

  • As of October 2026, Eden is the best Switch emulator for Android (stable v0.2.1, nightlies still shipping). Citron Neo has Android nightlies; Kenji-NX's Android build is still 2.1.0-pr.2 (2026-02-13).
  • Eden's minimum is a Snapdragon 865, Tensor G1, Exynos 2200 or Dimensity 8200 with 8GB of RAM. Recommended: Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, Tensor G4, Dimensity 8400. Optimal: Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, Dimensity 9400.
  • Snapdragon (Adreno) is the best supported and can use Turnip drivers. Mali GPUs in Dimensity and Tensor chips can't, and most Dimensity chips before mid-2023 don't run at all.
  • Use NCE as the CPU backend whenever possible, start at 1x resolution and keep Memory Layout at 4GB. Android 16 brings big Vulkan gains.
  • Cooling matters: Eden's docs say phone chips overheat easily and always recommend a cooler.

As of October 2026, the best way to play Switch games on an Android phone is Eden. Its Android build is the most mature, the stable release is v0.2.1 (2026-06-01), and nightlies kept coming through October. Alternatives are Citron Neo (Android nightly 2026-10-26) and the Ryujinx-based Kenji-NX (Android 2.1.0-pr.2, 2026-02-13). The chip matters more than the emulator: Snapdragon phones with Adreno GPUs are the best supported, and Eden's minimum is a Snapdragon 865, Tensor G1, Exynos 2200 or Dimensity 8200 with at least 8GB of RAM.

Can your phone run it?

Eden's official table (Android has no OpenGL support, so the GPU must support Vulkan 1.1):

TierChipGPURAM
MinimumSnapdragon 865 / Tensor G1 / Exynos 2200 / Dimensity 8200Adreno 650 / Mali-G788GB
RecommendedSnapdragon 8 Gen 1 / Tensor G4 / Exynos 2400 / Dimensity 8400Adreno 740 / Mali-G71512GB
OptimalSnapdragon 8 Gen 3 / Snapdragon G3 Gen 3 / Tensor G5 / Dimensity 9400Adreno 750 / Immortalis-G925 / Xclipse 950 / PowerVR DXT-4816GB

The recommended row doesn't line up perfectly (the Adreno 740 is actually the 8 Gen 2's GPU); we list it as Eden publishes it.

Chip by chip (Eden's docs)

ChipWhat to expect
Qualcomm Snapdragon (Adreno)Best supported. Adreno 6xx and 7xx with Turnip have the best compatibility; stock drivers are faster but less compatible; better stock-driver support for Adreno 8xx is in the works
MediaTek Dimensity (Mali / Immortalis)Generally very weak; most chips before mid-2023 don't work at all, which rules out most budget phones. The Dimensity 9400's Immortalis-G925 is the exception and does well on Android 16
Samsung Exynos (Xclipse)Chips before 2022 are unsupported; only the newest Xclipse GPUs (such as the Xclipse 950) are known to work
Google TensorPoor performance, though even the G1 runs some games well; the G4 is the best supported today; Eden says the G5 should do about as well as a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 on stock drivers, on paper
PowerVROnly the DXT-48-1536 is known to work

Eden's docs also put it bluntly: if your phone costs less than a Switch, it won't emulate the Switch very well. If you're unsure how strong your chip is, compare benchmarks against a Snapdragon 865, but beware that thermals and RAM skew results; a Pixel 6a performs at about a third of an 865 because of its RAM and cooling.

The Mali problem

  • Turnip is written for Qualcomm Adreno only. Mali, Immortalis and Xclipse GPUs can't use it. Some third-party sites claim Turnip works on Mali; that is false.
  • Eden's docs say these GPUs generally don't play well with driver injection. Injecting custom drivers such as Panfrost on a rooted system may give good results, but that is beyond what most users should attempt.
  • What you can do: update to Android 16, stay on the system driver, run below 1x, and stick to lighter games.

Pick an emulator

EmulatorVersion (as of 2026-10-30)Highlights
EdenStable v0.2.1 (2026-06-01), nightly 2026-10-18Most mature on Android; built-in GPU driver manager; NCE support; Standard, Legacy, Genshin Spoof and ChromeOS builds; not on the Play Store or F-Droid
Citron NeoStable 2026-04-27, Android nightly 2026-10-26Vulkan-only; a dedicated Snapdragon 8 Elite build; its FAQ mentions Android 13+ in a half-joking spec list; its 2026-03-20 notes said Android's future was uncertain
Kenji-NXAndroid 2.1.0-pr.2 (2026-02-13, pre-release)Ryujinx line; five chip-specific builds, including ones for 8 Gen 3 / 8 Elite and 8 Elite Gen 5; updates have slowed and downloads are limited

Android Authority's testing found Kenji-NX shines most on 8 Elite devices, while other chips generally do better with Eden. Closed-source paid apps such as Egg NS and DamonSwitch are not recommended; see fake emulator sites. For a closer comparison, see Eden vs Citron Neo vs Ryubing.

Which Eden APK

BuildFor
StandardMost people
Genshin Spoof (Optimized)Disguises Eden as Genshin Impact so some flagships enable the maker's performance mode or frame interpolation
LegacyOlder chips such as the Snapdragon 865; trades speed for compatibility
ChromeOSChromebooks

Install and first setup (Eden)

  1. Download the APK from the official site, eden-emu.dev; most people want Standard. Allow "install unknown apps" when Android asks.
  2. Open Eden, accept the disclaimer, tap Get Started and allow notifications.
  3. Install prod.keys: pick your prod.keys file. It decrypts retail games; skipping it limits you to homebrew.
  4. Install firmware: pick the firmware ZIP without extracting it. The firmware's nca files must sit at the root of the ZIP.
  5. Add Games: pick your games folder and tap Continue.
  6. Settings (gear at top left) > Controls > Player 1. Map a controller if you have one, or set the controller type to Handheld for on-screen play.
  7. On Snapdragon phones: Settings > GPU driver manager, tap Fetch at the bottom left to see recommended drivers, then install and select one (see below).
  8. Long-press a game for per-game settings (driver, docked mode, async shaders and more). In a game, swipe in from the left edge or press Back for the in-game menu; Overlay options let you hide touch controls and show performance or device stats.

For what keys and firmware are, see keys and firmware explained.

Updates, DLC, mods and saves

  • Updates and DLC: long-press a game > Add-ons > Install, then pick the file.
  • Mods and cheats: long-press a game > Add-ons > Install, and pick the folder level that contains cheats, romfs or exefs (usually the one named after the game's Title ID).
  • Saves: the game's properties include Save data. Importing overwrites the current save, so back up first. Saves work across emulators and devices.
  • Logs: Settings > Share Debug Logs. Attach them when you ask for help.

What Turnip drivers are

  • Turnip is the open-source Vulkan driver for Qualcomm Adreno GPUs in the Mesa graphics project. It works only on Adreno.
  • No root needed: emulators load driver packages through the AdrenoTools mechanism, so you just import a zip in the GPU driver manager. Eden can also assign a driver per game.
  • Why switch: Eden's docs say Adreno 6xx and 7xx with Turnip have the best compatibility. Stock drivers are faster, but many games render incorrectly.
  • Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and 8 Gen 3 have mature Turnip support; one late-2025 piece simply advised keeping your 8 Gen 3 if you want to run emulators.
  • Snapdragon 8 Elite and 8 Elite Gen 5 use Adreno 8xx. Mesa only added Adreno Gen 8 support in 26.0, and as of October 2026 Turnip on these GPUs is still experimental.
  • Newer isn't always better. If a game won't start, go back to the driver manager and try System Driver. Shader caches are tied to the driver, so the first session after switching recompiles shaders.

Driver versions and installation details are in the Turnip driver guide.

Performance settings (Eden)

SettingRecommendedNotes
CPU backendNCEEden: always use NCE when available; JIT costs a lot of performance
ResolutionStart at 1x; 0.5x–0.75x on entry chips1x is 720p handheld and 1080p docked; Eden labels 2x "Slow"
GPU ModeFastFast suits most games; switch to Accurate if particle effects look wrong
ASTC decodingGPUFast and recommended
Disk shader cacheOnMuch less stutter from the second session on
Async shadersOptionalLess stutter, possible glitches
Memory Layout4GB6GB and 8GB are labeled "Unsafe"; don't change it on phones with 8GB of RAM or less
VRAM Usage ModeConservativeUses less graphics memory
Extended Dynamic StateDefaultMali and PowerVR have trouble with EDS3; lower it if the screen flickers
Optimized Vertex BuffersDepends on driverNeeds Turnip from Mesa 26.0 or later, or Qualcomm's driver; Turnip 25.3 and older crash
Scaling filterSGSRQualcomm's upscaler, tuned for Adreno; poor on other GPUs
CPU accuracyDefaultTry Unsafe only if you fall short; it may introduce math errors
Force maximum clocksAs neededAdreno only; more heat

Eden's nightlies also have a frame generation feature under testing; the stable release doesn't. Eden's stance is to try defaults first and only tweak when a game won't run well.

Starting points by chip tier

Based on Eden's guidance plus community experience; the resolution values are community suggestions:

TierExample chipsStarting setup
EntrySnapdragon 865 / 870, Dimensity 8200, Tensor G1Legacy APK, 0.5x–0.75x, handheld mode, lighter games only
MainstreamSnapdragon 8 Gen 1 / 8 Gen 2Standard APK, Turnip, 1x, NCE, GPU ASTC decoding
High endSnapdragon 8 Gen 3, 8 Elite, 8 Elite Gen 5Standard or Genshin Spoof APK; mature Turnip on 8 Gen 3; on 8 Elite chips try the recommended driver, then the system driver; 1x–1.5x
Non-SnapdragonDimensity 9400, Tensor G4 / G5, Exynos 2400System driver, Android 16, start below 1x

Heat and cooling

  • Eden's docs: always use a cooler. Phone chips overheat easily, especially Samsung-made or underpowered ones.
  • Android 16 is strongly recommended: it brought major Vulkan compatibility and performance gains, with some Pixel users reporting more than 50% faster performance after updating.
  • The gap between benchmarks and real play comes mostly from cooling and RAM.
  • Close background apps before playing, and turn on your phone's performance mode if it has one (a community tip).
  • If games slow down over time, it's throttling: lower the resolution first, then consider a clip-on cooler.

FAQ

Can a Dimensity or Mali phone run Switch games? Can it use Turnip?

It can't use Turnip, which only works on Qualcomm Adreno GPUs. Eden's docs call Dimensity chips very weak and say most from before mid-2023 don't work at all. Mali is usually slow, but the Mali-G715 (Tensor G4) and Immortalis-G925 (Dimensity 9400) run surprisingly well on Android 16. Claims that Turnip works on Mali are wrong.

Which Eden APK should I install?

Standard for most people. Genshin Spoof (also called Optimized) disguises Eden as Genshin Impact so some flagship phones enable the maker's performance mode or frame interpolation. Older chips like the Snapdragon 865 should use Legacy, which trades speed for compatibility. There is also a ChromeOS build.

What driver should I use on a Snapdragon 8 Elite?

The 8 Elite's Adreno 830 and the 8 Elite Gen 5's GPU are Adreno 8xx parts, and as of October 2026 Turnip support for them is still experimental. Start with the recommended driver from Fetch in Eden's driver manager, and switch back to the system driver if it fails. You can also compare against Kenji-NX's builds made for 8 Gen 3 and 8 Elite.

Games get slower and my phone gets hot. What can I do?

That is thermal throttling. Eden's docs say always use a cooler, especially on Samsung-made or underpowered chips. Drop the resolution to 0.75x, close background apps, stay out of docked mode, and lower settings for that game if needed.

Is Eden on the Play Store? What about Egg NS?

Eden is not on the Play Store or F-Droid; get it only from eden-emu.dev. Egg NS and DamonSwitch are closed-source paid Android apps that Emulation General Wiki says copied yuzu and Skyline code in violation of the GPL. Avoid them.

How do I install prod.keys and firmware on Android?

Eden's first-run wizard has Install prod.keys and Install firmware steps. Pick your prod.keys file for the first, and the firmware ZIP for the second without extracting it; the firmware's nca files must sit at the root of the ZIP.
