Switch Emulator Troubleshooting: Crashes, Shader Stutter, Black Screen and More (2026)
Key points
- Start with three steps: update the emulator and GPU driver, reset settings to default, and read the log. That pins down most problems.
- Eden won't open on Windows? It's almost always the missing Visual C++ runtime. Ryubing flashes and closes? It's usually in a protected folder like Desktop or a drive root, or antivirus is blocking it.
- Key or firmware errors at game launch mean your keys are outdated or don't match the firmware. Replace them with newer ones dumped from your own console.
- Stutter the first time you play is shader compilation. It's normal and fades as you play. Use Vulkan and keep the shader cache on.
- On PC, low performance is usually a CPU limit, so lowering resolution rarely helps. On Android, check the driver, NCE and cooling first.

When a Switch emulator misbehaves, start with three steps: update the emulator and GPU driver, reset settings to default, and open the log. As of October 2026 the most common causes are: Eden missing the Visual C++ runtime, Ryubing sitting in a protected folder or blocked by antivirus, keys and firmware that are outdated or mismatched, and old GPU drivers (often only one of two GPUs updated). Stutter the first time you play is usually shader compilation and is normal. Below, each problem is laid out as symptom → cause → fix.
Look up an exact error message
Got a specific error popup? Go straight to its page:
| Error | Emulator | Page |
|---|---|---|
| Your ROM is encrypted | Eden, Citron Neo (Android) | Fix "Your ROM is encrypted" |
| Error while loading ROM! (0007-XXXX) | Eden, Citron Neo (PC) | 0007 error codes explained |
| RYU-0001 / 0002 / 0003, MissingKeyException | Ryubing, Kenji-NX | RYU error fixes |
| Waiting for JIT, MeloNX Crashed! | MeloNX | MeloNX error fixes |
| Encryption keys are missing, Firmware installation failed | Eden, Citron Neo | Key and firmware install errors |

Step one: basic checks and where the logs are
- Update to the latest official build (from the official site, never a random installer).
- Update your GPU driver. On dual-GPU laptops, update both.
- Reset settings to default. Ryubing's docs say "defaults plus Vulkan" is already optimal and that changing other settings will "most likely make performance worse, and in some cases crash." Eden also recommends testing with defaults first.
- Read the log, and attach it when you ask for help.
| Emulator | Where the log is |
|---|---|
| Ryubing | File → Open Logs Folder; open the newest, largest file. Keep the default log level; don't enable debug logs |
| Eden (PC) | File → Open Eden Folder → Log folder |
| Eden (Android) | Settings → Share Debug Logs |
Won't open or crashes on startup
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Eden does nothing when double-clicked, no log | Visual C++ runtime missing; rarely, corrupted system files | Install Microsoft's latest VC++ runtime and reboot; if that fails, run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth as admin and reboot |
| Ryubing window flashes and closes with no error | In a protected folder (Desktop, drive root, Program Files); antivirus removed files | Extract to a normal folder you own; add an antivirus exception |
| "none of the available GPUs meets the minimum requirements", "vulkan-1.dll" and similar | Old driver; only one of two GPUs updated; GPU too old (e.g. Intel 5th gen iGPU or older) | Update both GPU drivers from the vendors; in Eden you can also clean old drivers with DDU and unplug a second monitor |
| Eden fails to initialize Vulkan | That backend doesn't work on your GPU | Switch the graphics backend (Vulkan / OpenGL) in the config file |
| Ryubing's exe vanished after an update, or files became .ryuold | Updated while a game or settings window was open; antivirus | Download again and delete the broken folder (keep the portable folder) |
| "Device loss" on Windows 10 / 11 | Fullscreen optimizations | Eden's docs provide a way to add a compatibility flag for eden.exe |
| New Ryubing build crashes on game launch on Mac | Hypervisor issues | Turn off Hypervisor in CPU settings, or use an older build for now |
| MeloNX quits as soon as a game opens | JIT not enabled (MeloNX cannot run without JIT) | Follow enabling JIT with StikDebug; on iOS 26 you need a StikDebug script |
Game crashes at launch or won't load
| Symptom / log | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
MissingKeyException, can't decrypt title key or NCA | Keys missing or outdated | Replace with newer keys dumped from your own console |
RYU-0003: Firmware parsing error | Keys older than the firmware | Update keys and firmware together; keys must be at least as new as the firmware |
System archive ... was not found | Firmware too old for the game | Update keys and firmware |
ResultFsNonRealDataVerificationFailed (2002-4604) | Corrupted game or update file | If it boots without the update, the update is bad; otherwise the base game is. Dump it again |
ResultFsPathNotFound (2002-0001), "Could not find Main NCA" | You launched an update file as if it were the game | Attach updates to the game: Ryubing right-click → Manage Title Updates; Eden File → Install Files to NAND |
| Invalid memory access at 0x0000000000000000 | Conflicting mods or cheats (Ryubing loads disabled cheats too) | Remove mods and cheats one at a time |
UndefinedInstructionException ... opcode 0x00000000 | Corrupted PPTC cache | Right-click the game → Cache Management → delete PPTC or Queue PPTC Rebuild |
| "The guest program broke execution!" | The game itself crashed | Check the error code on the line before it |
| Eden log mentions online services before the crash | The game tried to go online | Settings → Network → enable Airplane Mode |
| Eden crashes on a missing service | Unimplemented system service | Settings → Debug → Enable Auto Stub (may help or make things less stable) |
| Pokémon Legends: Arceus or Scarlet/Violet crash at launch in Ryubing | "Use alternative memory layout (Developers)" is on | Turn it off |
For the concepts behind keys and firmware, see keys and firmware explained.
Shader stutter the first time you play
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Hitches when new areas or effects appear | Shaders are compiled for your GPU on the spot and the game waits | Normal; it fades as you play and compiled shaders are cached |
| Lots of stutter | Using OpenGL | Switch to Vulkan, which compiles shaders much faster |
| Stutters every session, cache seems useless | Shader cache turned off | Ryubing has it on by default, leave it on; in Eden enable "Use persistent cache" and "Use Vulkan pipeline cache" |
| You want even less stutter | — | Eden: "Use asynchronous shaders" (may cause brief glitches). Ryubing deliberately has no async compilation |
| Heavy stutter in ASTC-heavy games | ASTC decoding is expensive | Eden: set ASTC Decoding Method to GPU; Ryubing: enable texture recompression when VRAM is short |
| Stutter returns after a driver or GPU change | Caches are tied to driver and GPU | Normal; it rebuilds as you play |
| Fewer hitches on a first run | — | Let the intro play out or let the game run itself for a while (e.g. a racing game's auto-drive), then restart |
| Crash while compiling shaders at boot | Corrupted cache | Ryubing: right-click → Cache Management → Purge Shader Cache |
Black screen
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Black screen with audio (NVIDIA) | Control panel settings conflict | Reset NVIDIA Control Panel global settings to default |
| Black screen (AMD / Intel) | Old driver or OpenGL | Update the driver and use Vulkan |
| Black screen (old Intel iGPU) | 5th gen and older lack required Vulkan features | Intel iGPUs need 6th gen or newer |
| Black screen (general) | Overlay software hooking in | Close MSI Afterburner, Twitch Studio and similar overlays |
| Transparent window (AMD) | Radeon sharpening | Turn off global Radeon sharpening |
| The Great Ace Attorney black screen | Upscaled resolution | Set resolution back to native |
| Xenoblade Chronicles 3 cutscenes invisible | Backend issue | Use Vulkan |
Graphics glitches and artifacts
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Blurry even after raising resolution | The game's own FSR / FXAA doesn't scale with resolution | Use a graphics mod that raises the game's internal resolution instead of emulator upscaling |
| Rainbow artifacts everywhere in Tears of the Kingdom | AMD RX 400/500 (Polaris) issue | Ryubing's answer: "use Linux or change GPUs" |
| Pokémon Scarlet/Violet looks wrong in Eden | Build differences | Switch to Eden's MSVC build |
| Invisible models in Pokémon Legends: Arceus | GPU too old for required features | Update the driver or the GPU |
| Particle effects wrong (Eden Android) | GPU accuracy too low | Change GPU Mode from Fast to Accurate |
| Flickering (Android Mali / PowerVR) | Eden's docs say these GPUs have problems with Extended Dynamic State 3 | Lower the Extended Dynamic State level |
| Flickering or glitches (Android Snapdragon) | Driver issue | Try another Turnip version or go back to the system driver; see Turnip drivers |
| Lots of artifacts in Ryubing on Mac | Hypervisor | Turn off Hypervisor and retest |
Audio problems
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Audio drifts out of sync after an hour or so | Builds up over long sessions | Press F5 to pause and resume; if on SDL2, try OpenAL |
| Crash with "No valid channel configuration found!" | SoundIO backend | Switch to SDL2 or OpenAL |
| Audio issues or soft locks on Mac | Backend compatibility | Set the audio backend to SDL2 |
| Crackling or stutter on iOS | Older version | Update MeloNX: 2.5 fixed audio stutter and 2.6 added a new audio backend |
| Microphone does nothing | Not supported | Neither Ryubing nor MeloNX supports microphone input |
Out of memory
| Platform | Symptom | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| PC | Stutter or crashes; ErrorOutOfDeviceMemory (VRAM) | At least 8GB RAM, 12GB+ on iGPU laptops; lower the resolution scale (Ryubing says 4x is "overkill for almost every setup"); enable texture recompression in Ryubing |
| Android | Crashes mid-game | Keep Eden's Memory Layout at 4GB (6GB and 8GB are marked unsafe; don't change it on phones with 8GB RAM or less); set VRAM Usage Mode to Conservative; close background apps |
| iPhone / iPad | MeloNX says it needs a higher memory limit | The Increased Memory Limit entitlement is required; iPhones under 4GB and iPads under 8GB also need Extended Virtual Addressing from a paid developer account |
| Mac | Tight on 8GB models | Leave the emulated DRAM size at default |
Save problems
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Game says the save is corrupted | Save made on a newer game version; or damaged by a power cut or crash | Update the game to the matching version; restore from backup |
ResultKvdbInvalidKeyValue and similar save index errors | No permission on the save folder, or a corrupted index | Back up first, then delete that game's save folder and relaunch |
| Eden saves "disappeared" | Orphaned profile: the saves sit in another profile folder | Back up, then rename or merge the profile folder as Eden's docs describe |
| Imported save isn't detected | The folder doesn't exist yet | Launch the game in the emulator and save once, then copy the save in |
| Deleted a user profile and the saves went with it | Ryubing deletes saves with the profile | Back up before deleting; the default RyuPlayer profile can't be deleted |
Ryubing's docs note that saves work across every Switch device and emulator. Regular backups beat every other fix.
Low performance and FPS
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Low FPS on PC, lowering resolution does nothing | CPU too slow (most common) | It's a CPU bottleneck; see hardware requirements |
| Low FPS on AMD / Intel GPUs | Using OpenGL | Switch to Vulkan |
| Low FPS on a laptop | Emulator running on the iGPU | Make sure it uses the dedicated GPU, and update both drivers |
| Ryubing loads slowly every time | PPTC not active yet | Launch the game at least twice to the title screen; it kicks in from the third launch |
| Ryubing is slow on Linux / Steam Deck | Running the binary directly | Launch with Ryujinx.sh |
| Eden slower than other people's | Wrong build | Use the PGO build and the build for your CPU (Zen 4, Steam Deck and so on) |
| Low FPS and throttling on Android | NCE off, wrong driver, overheating | Eden's docs: always use NCE when available; Turnip on Snapdragon; use a cooler; update to Android 16 |
| Breath of the Wild / Tears of the Kingdom stuck at 20 fps | The games drop to a 20 fps cap when they can't hold 30 | Game behavior, not an emulator bug |
| Uneven frame pacing | Vsync | Turn off emulator vsync and cap frames with the GPU driver or RTSS (not for Smash Bros.) |
For what each setting does, see performance and graphics settings. If switching emulators might help, see Eden vs Citron Neo vs Ryubing.
FAQ
Why does Eden crash or not open?
If double-clicking Eden on Windows does nothing and leaves no log, install Microsoft's latest Visual C++ runtime and reboot. If that fails, run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth as administrator and reboot again. For in-game crashes, update your GPU driver, reset settings to default and check the log.
How do I fix Ryubing (Ryujinx) crashing on launch?
When Ryubing's window flashes and closes, it is usually sitting in a protected folder such as Desktop, a drive root or Program Files, or antivirus deleted its files. Extract it to a normal folder you own and add an antivirus exception. On dual-GPU laptops, update both GPU drivers.
Why does my Switch emulator stutter?
The first time a new effect or area appears, the emulator compiles shaders for your GPU and the game waits. Compiled shaders are cached, so it stutters less the more you play. Use the Vulkan backend and keep the shader cache on. In Eden you can also enable async shaders, at the cost of brief graphics glitches.
Black screen but I can hear audio. What now?
On NVIDIA, reset NVIDIA Control Panel's global settings to default. On AMD and Intel, update the driver and switch to Vulkan. Intel iGPUs must be 6th gen or newer. Also close overlays such as MSI Afterburner and streaming tools, then try again.
My emulator saves disappeared. How do I get them back?
Don't delete anything yet. In Ryubing, deleting a user profile also deletes its saves. In Eden, missing saves are often an orphaned profile: the saves still exist in another profile folder. Back up the whole data folder, then rename or merge the profile folder as Eden's docs describe.
How do I fix low FPS?
On PC the most common cause is a CPU that isn't fast enough, and lowering resolution usually does nothing. Confirm you're on Vulkan, your driver is current and settings are default. Use Eden's PGO build, and in Ryubing let PPTC kick in by launching the game more than twice. Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom lock to 20 fps when they can't hold 30; that is how the games work.
