Fix "Broken Vulkan Installation Detected" and "An Error Occurred Initializing the Video Core"
Key points
- "Broken Vulkan Installation Detected" means Vulkan failed to start when Eden launched. The usual cause is an old GPU driver, or a dual-GPU laptop with only one driver updated.
- Eden falls back to OpenGL automatically. Citron Neo switches the renderer to Null (no picture), so after fixing the driver you have to set the API back to Vulkan yourself.
- "An error occurred initializing the video core" on PC usually means outdated drivers, integrated GPU included. On Android it means an incompatible driver: try another Turnip build.
- Ryubing's "none of the available GPUs meets the minimum requirements", "vulkan-1.dll" and "ErrorFeatureNotPresent" mean no usable Vulkan GPU. Update both GPU drivers from the vendors.
- "ErrorOutOfDeviceMemory" means VRAM ran out, so lower the resolution scale. "ErrorDeviceLost" is a driver crash: try an older NVIDIA driver, or update AMD and Intel drivers.
On this page
"Broken Vulkan Installation Detected" and "An error occurred initializing the video core" both mean the emulator couldn't start its graphics backend on your GPU. The most common cause is an outdated GPU driver, or a dual-GPU laptop where only one driver was updated. Fix: install the latest driver from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel for both GPUs, remove the old driver with DDU on Windows if needed, and unplug any second monitor. One catch: Eden falls back to OpenGL when Vulkan breaks, but Citron Neo switches the renderer to Null (no picture), so you have to set the API back to Vulkan after fixing the driver. On Android, the same video core message means an incompatible GPU driver, and the fix is a different driver. Messages below are verbatim from Eden and Citron Neo source code and Ryubing's FAQ as of November 1, 2026.

Eden for PC
"Broken Vulkan Installation Detected": Eden falls back to OpenGL
Broken Vulkan Installation Detected
Vulkan initialization failed during boot.
Eden tries Vulkan every time it starts and shows this box if that fails.
According to Eden's source code, Eden then switches the graphics backend to OpenGL (or to Null, with no picture, if that build has no OpenGL), and greys out the graphics API button on the status bar. Games still start, but on OpenGL, which is usually slower and stutters more while compiling shaders.
Eden's troubleshooting doc lists these fixes:
- Install the latest GPU driver from the NVIDIA, AMD or Intel website, not just Windows Update. On a dual-GPU laptop, update both.
- Remove old drivers first. On Windows you can use Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU).
- Unplug any second monitor.
- Switch the backend manually in the settings file (see "Switching Vulkan and OpenGL manually" below).
After the driver is fixed, reopen Eden and check the API under Emulation > Configure > Graphics. If it still says OpenGL, set it back to Vulkan.
A GPU that's simply too old causes this too. Eden needs Vulkan 1.1 or OpenGL 4.6, and Intel iGPUs must be 6th gen or newer. See Switch emulator system requirements.
"An error occurred initializing the video core" (at game launch)
An error occurred initializing the video core.
This is usually caused by outdated GPU drivers. Please see the log for more details.
This box appears when you launch a game: the graphics backend failed to start. Update your GPU driver, update both GPUs on a dual-GPU machine, and if it still fails, open File > Open Eden Folders > Log Folder and attach eden_log.txt when you ask for help.
OpenGL errors
With the OpenGL backend you may see one of these:
| Message | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
Error while initializing OpenGL 4.6! / Your GPU may not support OpenGL 4.6, or you do not have the latest graphics driver. GL Renderer: … | GPU doesn't support OpenGL 4.6, or no GPU driver is installed at all | Install the GPU vendor's driver, or switch to Vulkan |
Error while initializing OpenGL! / Your GPU may not support one or more required OpenGL extensions. … Unsupported extensions: … | Driver lacks required OpenGL extensions | Update the driver, or switch to Vulkan |
On AMD GPUs, use Vulkan.
"Device loss occurred!" in the log
The GPU driver crashed or timed out during a game. On Windows 10 and 11, Eden's docs describe a fix related to fullscreen optimizations; see Switch emulator troubleshooting. Otherwise, follow Ryubing's ErrorDeviceLost advice below.
Switching Vulkan and OpenGL manually
If settings open, change the API under Emulation > Configure > Graphics. If they don't, Eden's troubleshooting doc says to switch the backend value in the settings file between 0 and 1. In Eden's source, the setting is called backend (Renderer category):
| Value | Backend |
|---|---|
0 | OpenGL |
1 | Vulkan |
2 | Null (no output) |
Citron Neo for PC: set Vulkan back by hand
Citron Neo uses the same title with an extra support line:
Broken Vulkan Installation Detected
Vulkan initialization failed during boot.
For support, please visit Help > Get Support (Discord) in the main emulation window.
Unlike Eden, Citron Neo sets the renderer straight to Null (renderer_backend = Null in its source) instead of falling back to OpenGL. Games then show no picture, which looks like a black screen. If you still get no picture after updating your driver, check this first: the renderer doesn't switch back on its own. Once the driver is fixed, open the graphics settings and set the API back to Vulkan.
Citron Neo's video core message also reads differently:
An error occurred initializing the video core.
citron has encountered an error while running the video core. This is usually caused by outdated GPU drivers, including integrated ones. Please see the log for more details.
Note "including integrated ones": on a laptop, updating only the dedicated GPU isn't enough. Update the Intel or AMD integrated GPU driver too.
Eden for Android: the video core error means change the driver
An error occurred initializing the video core
This is usually caused by an incompatible GPU driver. Installing a custom GPU driver may resolve this problem.
On Android the cause differs from PC. It's not an outdated driver but a GPU driver that doesn't work with the emulator. Fixes:
- Snapdragon phones: Settings > GPU driver manager, then pick another Turnip build or go back to System Driver. If only one game fails, long-press that game in the list and set a driver for it alone.
- MediaTek, Exynos and other non-Snapdragon phones: Mali and Xclipse GPUs can't use Turnip and stay on the system driver. Eden recommends Android 16, which brings big Vulkan improvements.
For what Turnip is and which build suits which chip, see Turnip drivers for Android. For driver manager errors such as "Error during Fetch", see Eden key, firmware and driver install errors.
Ryubing (Ryujinx) Vulkan errors
Ryubing mostly reports GPU problems in its log (File > Open Logs Folder, then the newest, largest file). Here are the messages and what the official FAQ says:
| Log message | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
Ryujinx.Graphics.Vulkan.VulkanException: Initialization failed, none of the available GPUs meets the minimum requirements. | A laptop with AMD Ryzen graphics and an NVIDIA GPU where only one driver was updated; old drivers; a GPU that's too old (Intel 5th gen iGPUs and older) | Update both GPU drivers from the vendors' websites, not just Windows Update |
NullReferenceException … CommandBufferPool.AddWaitable | Same as above | Same as above |
Unexpected API error "ErrorFeatureNotPresent". | No Vulkan-capable GPU found | Update the driver. If that fails, the GPU doesn't meet the requirements |
System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not find or load the native library: vulkan-1.dll | Same as above | Same as above |
System.NotSupportedException: No supported Vulkan surface found! | Same as above | Same as above |
Unexpected API error "ErrorDeviceLost". | Generic Vulkan driver crash; the FAQ says most users can't fix it | NVIDIA: try an older driver (the FAQ notes device-lost problems starting with driver 527.37, an older report). AMD/Intel: update the driver, and consider Linux with Mesa drivers |
Unexpected API error "ErrorOutOfDeviceMemory". | Out of VRAM: resolution scale too high (4x is almost always too much), or a game heavy on ASTC textures | Lower the resolution scale; enable texture recompression |
Fatal error. System.AccessViolationException (mentioning Vulkan and SDL2) | GShade hooks, or the "OpenCL, OpenGL, and Vulkan Compatibility Pack" on ROG Ally | Uninstall GShade or that compatibility pack |
The FAQ names Tears of the Kingdom, Bayonetta 3, Fire Emblem Engage and Super Mario Bros. Wonder among the ASTC-heavy games that run out of VRAM easily.
No error, but a black screen
If no box appears and you hear audio but see nothing, it's probably not one of the errors on this page. Common causes: changed global settings in the NVIDIA Control Panel (reset them), AMD or Intel running OpenGL (switch to Vulkan), an Intel iGPU that's too old, or an overlay app conflict. See Switch emulator troubleshooting for the full list. On Citron Neo, first make sure the graphics API isn't set to Null (see above).
FAQ
How do I fix "Broken Vulkan Installation Detected" in Eden?
Vulkan failed to initialize when Eden started. Install the latest driver from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel, and update both GPUs on a dual-GPU laptop. On Windows you can remove the old driver with DDU first. Unplug any second monitor. Eden switches to OpenGL in the meantime, so set the API back to Vulkan in the graphics settings once the driver is fixed.
What does "An error occurred initializing the video core" mean?
The emulator couldn't start its graphics backend when launching a game. On PC the message says outdated GPU drivers are the usual cause, and Citron Neo adds that integrated GPUs count too, so update both. On Android the message points to an incompatible GPU driver. On Snapdragon, try another Turnip build or switch back to the system driver.
Citron Neo still shows no picture after I fixed my GPU driver. Why?
When Citron Neo detects broken Vulkan, it sets the renderer to Null, which outputs nothing. It doesn't switch back by itself after the driver is fixed. Open the graphics settings and set the API back to Vulkan.
How do I fix the video core error on Eden for Android?
The Android message says an incompatible GPU driver is the usual cause and a custom driver may help. On Snapdragon, open the GPU driver manager and pick another Turnip build, or go back to System Driver. You can also long-press a game to set a driver for that game only. MediaTek and Exynos phones can't use Turnip and stay on the system driver.
Ryujinx says "none of the available GPUs meets the minimum requirements". What now?
Ryubing found no GPU that meets its Vulkan requirements. The most common case is a laptop with AMD Ryzen graphics and an NVIDIA GPU where only one driver was updated. Old drivers and very old GPUs (Intel 5th gen iGPUs and older) also cause it. Update both drivers from the vendors' websites, not just through Windows Update.
How do I fix ErrorDeviceLost in Ryujinx or Ryubing?
ErrorDeviceLost is a generic Vulkan driver crash, and Ryubing's FAQ says most users can't fix it themselves. On NVIDIA, try rolling back to an older driver. On AMD and Intel, update the driver, and consider Linux with Mesa drivers if it keeps happening.
What does ErrorOutOfDeviceMemory mean?
Your GPU ran out of VRAM. The usual cause is a resolution scale set too high; 4x is almost always too much. Games with lots of ASTC textures, such as Tears of the Kingdom, Bayonetta 3, Fire Emblem Engage and Super Mario Bros. Wonder, use more. Lower the resolution scale and turn on texture recompression.
How do I switch Eden between Vulkan and OpenGL manually?
Normally, change the API under Emulation > Configure > Graphics. If you can't open settings, Eden's troubleshooting doc says to switch the backend value in the settings file between 0 and 1. In Eden's source the setting is called backend: 0 is OpenGL, 1 is Vulkan, 2 is Null (no output).
