Switch Emulator on Steam Deck: Eden AppImage Setup, Game Mode and Best Settings (October 2026)

Published Facts checked 2026-10-306 min read

Key points

  • As of October 2026, the best Switch emulator for Steam Deck is Eden's Steam Deck (Zen 2) AppImage; Eden recommends the PGO build. Zen 4 handhelds such as ROG Ally and Legion Go use the Zen 4 build.
  • Do keys, firmware and first setup in Desktop Mode, then add the AppImage to Game Mode with Steam's Add a Non-Steam Game.
  • In Desktop Mode, set Player 1 to Steam Virtual Gamepad 0 and keep Steam running. Gyro needs SteamDeckGyroDSU.
  • The Deck screen is 800p, so handheld mode at 1x is the safe default. Eden runs better on Linux than on Windows in general.
  • Ryubing is maintenance-only. On the Deck use the x64 build and launch it through Ryujinx.sh, not the binary.

As of October 2026, the best way to play Switch games on a Steam Deck is Eden using its Steam Deck AppImage. It is built for the Deck's Zen 2 CPU, and Eden recommends the PGO version, which is usually 10–30% faster than the standard build. The flow: download the AppImage in Desktop Mode, add keys and firmware dumped from your own console, map controls, then add it to Game Mode with Steam's Add a Non-Steam Game. ROG Ally and Legion Go handhelds running SteamOS or another Linux distro work the same way with the Zen 4 build.

Pick the right build

DeviceCPUEden build
Steam DeckAMD Zen 2Steam Deck AppImage (PGO)
ROG Ally / Ally X, Legion Go / Go S (Z1, Z1 Extreme, Z2)AMD Zen 4Zen 4 build (named rog-ally in the file name)
Other x86 Linux PCs and handhelds—amd64 AppImage; Legacy amd64 for pre-Haswell CPUs
ARM Linux devices—aarch64 AppImage (NCE is experimental on Linux)

Eden's docs say Linux almost always runs Eden better than Windows on the same hardware, and AMD's RADV driver gets first-class testing. That is exactly the Steam Deck's setup.

Other options: Ryubing has an x64 AppImage but has been maintenance-only since February 2026, and Citron Neo has a Vulkan-only Linux build. For Eden's spec tiers, see hardware requirements.

Before you start

  • Desktop Mode: press the STEAM button, then Power, then Switch to Desktop. A keyboard and mouse make the first setup much easier.
  • Keys and firmware: prod.keys and firmware are dumped from a Switch console; see keys and firmware explained for what they are.
  • Eden's folders: data lives in /home/deck/.local/share/Eden, config in /home/deck/.config/Eden.

Install Eden in Desktop Mode

  1. Open a browser in Desktop Mode and download the Stable Steam Deck AppImage from Eden's official site, eden-emu.dev. Other "Eden download" sites are not official; see fake emulator sites.
  2. Put the AppImage somewhere permanent. Your Steam shortcut will point to it.
  3. Double-click it. The first launch asks you to confirm; click Continue.
  4. If another Switch emulator was installed before, Eden offers to import its settings. Choose as you like.
  5. Eden warns that keys are missing. Click OK.
  6. Open Tools > Install Decryption Keys, select your prod.keys and click Open.
  7. Open Tools > Install Firmware and pick From Folder or From ZIP.
  8. Double-click the empty main window to add your games folder (internal storage or microSD both work).
  9. Open Emulation > Configure > Input and set Player 1 to Steam Virtual Gamepad 0 (details below).
  10. Launch a game to make sure it boots before you set up Game Mode.

Add Eden to Game Mode

  1. While still in Desktop Mode, open Steam.
  2. In the top menu, choose Games > Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library.
  3. Click Browse, find the Eden AppImage, tick it and click Add Selected Programs.
  4. The AppImage is a native Linux program, so don't force Proton under Compatibility.
  5. Back in Game Mode, Eden shows up under the Non-Steam tab of your library.

The shortcut points to an exact file name. When you update Eden and the new AppImage has a different name, rename it to the old name or change the shortcut's target in Steam.

Controllers and gyro

Controllers (from Eden's Controllers doc):

  • In Desktop Mode, ignore the physical Pro or Xbox controller and set Player 1 to Steam Virtual Gamepad 0. For a second pad, set Player 2 to Steam Virtual Gamepad 1.
  • Steam must not be closed in Desktop Mode.
  • After waking from sleep, the Deck and an external pad fight over slot 0; whichever is pressed first wins. Don't touch the Deck's buttons, turn on the external pad, then open Eden. In Game Mode you can also reorder controllers with Steam's built-in tool.
  • Most controllers work out of the box. Save a profile, then assign it per game with right-click > Properties > Input Profiles.

Gyro (motion controls):

  1. In Desktop Mode, open EmuDeck and install SteamDeckGyroDSU under 3rd Party Tools > Gyroscope, or install it by hand following its own instructions.
  2. Reboot the Deck.
  3. Back in Desktop Mode, open /home/deck/.config/Eden in the file manager and edit qt-config.ini with Kate.
  4. Find player_0_motionleft=[empty] and change it to: player_0_motionleft="motion:0,pad:0,port:26760,guid:0000000000000000000000007f000001,engine:cemuhookudp"
  5. Save, open Eden and test in a game that supports motion.

Performance settings

SettingSteam Deck pickWhy
BuildSteam Deck PGO AppImageEden's recommended build
Graphics APIVulkanThe Deck has an AMD GPU, and Ryubing's docs say AMD should always use Vulkan
Docked modeOff (handheld)Handheld mode renders at a lower resolution
Resolution scale1xThe Deck screen is 800p, so upscaling gains little
Shader cacheOnTurn on both "Use persistent cache" and "Use Vulkan pipeline cache" in Eden
Async shadersOptionalLess stutter, possible glitches
ASTC decodingGPU
CPU accuracyDefaultUnsafe options can be faster but may add math errors; gains vary per game

Tips:

  • Stutter the first time you play is shader compilation; it fades the more you play. Letting the intro play through once and restarting helps.
  • If frame rate drops, check whether the Steam Quick Access performance menu caps Eden's frame rate or power, and reset it before comparing.
  • If your Linux handheld's desktop defaults to Wayland, note that Eden's docs advise against Wayland. Tick "Force X11 as Graphics Backend" or launch with QT_QPA_PLATFORM=xcb.
  • Eden's "Enable Gamemode" only does something if Feral's GameMode is installed.

More tuning is in performance settings.

Playing on a TV (docked mode)

When the Deck is docked to a TV, you can turn on docked mode in Eden. Eden's 1x scale means 720p in handheld mode and 1080p in docked mode, so docked mode is noticeably heavier. If performance drops on the TV, go back to handheld mode or set the scale to 0.75x.

Updates, DLC, mods and saves in Eden

  1. Updates and DLC: File > Install Files to NAND... lets you select several files. After the check, click Install; the Add-Ons column shows them. Merged files that already contain the base game, update and DLC skip this step.
  2. Mods: right-click a game > Open Mod Data Location opens that game's mod folder. Give each mod its own subfolder containing exefs or romfs. Restart Eden and tick it under right-click > Configure Game > Add-Ons.
  3. Cheats: go in the mod folder and are enabled by default in Eden; untick them under Add-Ons to disable. Cheats are tied to a game version, so update them when the game updates.
  4. Saves: right-click a game > Open Save Data Location. Before reinstalling or switching devices, copy the whole /home/deck/.local/share/Eden folder to microSD or a PC. Saves work across emulators and devices, and Eden's docs include a Syncthing guide for syncing between devices.

Ryubing on the Deck

  1. Download the Linux x64 AppImage or tar.gz. Not the ARM64 one.
  2. With the tar.gz, launch through Ryujinx.sh, not the binary itself, or performance suffers (Ryubing FAQ).
  3. Keys: File > Open Ryujinx Folder > system subfolder, add prod.keys and restart. Install firmware with Tools > Install Firmware.
  4. Mount updates and DLC via right-click > Manage Title Updates / Manage DLC. If you use EmuDeck, its wiki says updates and DLC go in Emulation/storage/Ryujinx/patchesAndDlc, not in roms/switch.

As of October 2026, the EmuDeck wiki has no Eden page yet, so follow EmuDeck's own instructions if you install Eden through it.

ROG Ally, Legion Go and other Zen 4 handhelds

  • Use Eden's Zen 4 build. It exists for both Windows and Linux.
  • On Windows, prefer the GPU driver from the device maker (ASUS, Lenovo).
  • If a ROG Ally on Windows hits AccessViolationException, Ryubing's FAQ fix is to uninstall "OpenCL, OpenGL, and Vulkan Compatibility Pack" under Add or Remove Programs.
  • If Windows drivers keep causing trouble, consider Linux; Ryubing's FAQ says Mesa drivers usually have fewer bugs.

FAQ

Should I use Eden or Ryubing on Steam Deck?

As of October 2026, use Eden. It ships a Steam Deck-specific AppImage and still updates often. Ryubing has been maintenance-only since February 2026, with its stable release still at 1.3.3 (2025-10-11), so treat it as a backup.

My controller doesn't work in Eden in Game Mode. What do I check?

In Emulation > Configure > Controls, set Player 1 to Steam Virtual Gamepad 0 instead of the physical controller. In Desktop Mode, Steam must stay open. If an external pad can't grab slot 0, reorder controllers with Steam's built-in tool in Game Mode.

How do I get gyro aiming on Steam Deck in Eden?

Install SteamDeckGyroDSU (EmuDeck can do it under 3rd Party Tools > Gyroscope), reboot, then edit /home/deck/.config/Eden/qt-config.ini so player_0_motionleft points to cemuhook UDP on 127.0.0.1, port 26760.

I updated Eden and the Steam shortcut stopped working. Why?

The Steam shortcut points to an exact file name. If the new AppImage has a different name, either rename it to the old name or right-click the shortcut in Steam, open Properties and change the target.

Which Eden file is for Steam Deck? Can I use the aarch64 build?

Use the Steam Deck PGO AppImage. The aarch64 build is for ARM Linux devices; the Steam Deck is an x86 AMD Zen 2 machine and can't run it. Zen 4 handhelds such as ROG Ally and Legion Go S should use the Zen 4 build.
