Zelda: Ocarina of Time Switch 2 Emulator: It Boots on PC on Launch Day, but Isn't Playable Yet

Published 6 min read

Key points

  • Within hours of launch, the Ocarina of Time remake boots and gets in-game on PC through unofficial Eden forks, but it isn't properly playable yet.
  • Lichii build 75 is the only released build with the startup fix. Its developer measured 12-22 fps on a Ryzen 9 5900X with an RTX 3080; outdoor areas are washed out by fog and glow.
  • Handheld mode shows a black 3D screen on Lichii; switching to docked mode helps on NVIDIA but not on AMD. Eglantine's own release builds still hang on 'Launching...'.
  • Mac: an unmerged nxnative test build reaches Kokiri Forest at about 60 fps on an M5, per its author. Android and iPhone: nothing working. No native PC port exists.
  • On Switch 2 itself, Digital Foundry measured 1080p-1440p docked at a steady 60 fps with FSR1. As of Nov 5, we found no Nintendo DMCA notice aimed at this game.

As of the afternoon of November 5, 2026 (Beijing time), launch day for the Switch 2 remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, the game boots and gets in-game on PC, but it isn't properly playable yet. The only released build with the fix that lets it start is Lichii build 75, an unofficial Eden fork: 12-22 fps on a strong PC, washed-out graphics outdoors, and a black screen in handheld mode. Eglantine's own release builds still hang on "Launching...". On Mac, only an unmerged nxnative test build gets in-game, at about 60 fps by its author's account. Android has nothing that works, and there is no native PC port.

Every report here was posted after review embargoes lifted (7:00 pm Beijing time on November 4). The game launched in Japan at midnight local time on November 5. Notebookcheck and TechEBlog called the PC footage "before release" because they counted in US time.

The fix that matters is Eglantine PR #567. At startup the game asks the kernel for a 64-bit "wait if equal" operation that the emulator didn't implement; the emulator returned an error and the game aborted itself. The PR author's own test reached the menu at 60 fps on an RTX 5090 and noted that this "does not establish full-game compatibility". Lichii then ported the fix, added translations for about 80 shaders (2,759 of the game's 2,768 shader programs now translate, per its PR), and shipped build 75.

nxnative is a different route. It doesn't emulate: Switch 2 and Apple chips both use ARM64, so it runs the game's own code directly on the Mac and rebuilds the graphics on Metal. It is only officially tested on Mac, and iPhone and iPad are untested. Ocarina of Time is not in its main version or on nxnative.dev yet. A user's MacBook Air M4 also crashed on launch with the main version because an audio service is missing; a fix has been written but not merged.

Both routes read the game the same way: as a decrypted game folder or a .nup file taken from a Switch 2 console, with Title ID 0400486024DEC000. They don't use Switch 1 prod.keys; for how keys and firmware work on the Switch 1 side, see keys and firmware explained.

How it looks on Switch 2

For comparison, Digital Foundry's tech review found the remake runs at a dynamic 1080p-1440p docked and 720p-1080p in handheld mode, and it hits its 60 fps target consistently, with only tiny loading hiccups. It uses FSR1 with SMAA, not DLSS, and there's no 4K mode. A day-one patch, version 1.1.1 (about 343 MB), went out on November 4. Most emulator reports above used 1.1.1; the nxnative test build used the unpatched 1.0.0.

Early copies and Nintendo's response

Physical copies leaked days before launch: TheGamer reported on November 1 that a Reddit user was already playing on an early cartridge, and full playthrough videos were online before release. The PC forks only got the game booting on launch day. As of November 5, we found no DMCA notice or takedown from Nintendo aimed at this game: Nintendo's October notices in GitHub's public DMCA repository target other projects, there were none in November through November 4, and the Lichii and Eglantine repositories were still online in the afternoon of November 5 (Beijing time).

Videos claiming a "native PC version" of the remake are going around. We found no such project on GitHub or in recompilation project lists; see how to spot fake emulator sites.

What this means for players

If you want to play the Ocarina of Time remake on PC right now, expect a slideshow with white fog, and on AMD cards often no picture at all. It's a first-day boot, not a playable build. Things are moving fast: the fog, the AMD black screen and the missing shader instructions all have open work, and nxnative's Mac build may land once its PRs are merged. Compatibility records are on the Ocarina of Time game page. For the forks themselves, see Eden Switch 2 forks and the first emulators that run Switch 2 games; for Mac, see nxnative; for the full picture, read our Switch 2 emulation guide.

FAQ

Can I play the Ocarina of Time remake on PC?

It boots and gets in-game, but as of November 5, 2026 it isn't properly playable. The only released build with the startup fix is Lichii build 75, an unofficial Eden fork. Its developer measured 12-22 fps on a Ryzen 9 5900X with an RTX 3080, outdoor areas are washed out by fog and glow, and handheld mode shows a black 3D screen. Official Eden and other Switch 1 emulators don't run Switch 2 games.

What PC and graphics card do I need for Ocarina of Time on an emulator?

No hardware runs it well yet. On Lichii build 75, a Ryzen 9 5900X with an RTX 3080 gets 12-22 fps, and an RTX 5080 with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D still 'runs slowly'. AMD cards do worse for now: an RX 5700 turns black after starting a new game, an RX 9070 XT showed no in-game picture, and an RX 9060 XT crashed after the intro.

Does Ocarina of Time run on Mac, Android or iPhone?

Mac: only through an unmerged nxnative test build, whose author reports Kokiri Forest at about 60 fps on an Apple M5, with overexposed areas and physics problems. nxnative's main version and nxnative.dev don't list the game yet. Android: no working reports; Lichii's Linux ARM build shows a black screen on an AYN Thor, and nx2android hasn't added it. iPhone: nothing.

Do I need prod.keys for Ocarina of Time on a Switch 2 emulator?

No. The Switch 2 forks and nxnative read the game as a decrypted game folder or a .nup file taken from a Switch 2 console, not as a Switch 1 NSP or XCI, so Switch 1 prod.keys don't come into it. See our keys and firmware explainer for how the Switch 1 side works.

What is the Title ID of Ocarina of Time on Switch 2?

0400486024DEC000. That's the application ID on Nintendo's US store page. Emulators and nxnative show it in game lists and folder names. The day-one patch brings the game to version 1.1.1.

Is Ship of Harkinian the Ocarina of Time remake on PC?

No. Ship of Harkinian is an unofficial port of the 1998 Nintendo 64 Ocarina of Time, released by Harbour Masters in 2022. It has nothing to do with the 2026 Switch 2 remake and can't run it. No native PC port of the remake exists.
