Key points

  • Suyu forked from yuzu right after yuzu shut down in March 2024. The original team announced the end of development on 2025-02-13.
  • In September 2026 original developer Crimson-Hawk released v0.0.4 Final Edition as a wrap-up, and the organization was marked archived on September 13.
  • New maintainers continue as suyu-main. Latest v14.1.0 (2026-10-12), built around ahead-of-time translation of game code.
  • Drippu, billed as suyu experimental, works on an ARM native recompiler. Its iOS work is research only, not a usable app.
  • Suyu repos keep getting DMCA'd: about 300 went down on 2026-08-17 alone. For everyday play, Eden is the better pick.

Suyu's original project is over, but the name lives on. The original team announced the end of development on February 13, 2025. Original developer Crimson-Hawk shipped v0.0.4 "Final Edition" in September 2026 as a wrap-up, and the project was archived. The same month, new maintainers picked it up as suyu-main, whose latest release is v14.1.0 (October 12, 2026). An experimental branch, Drippu, sits in the same organization. For everyday play, Eden is the better choice.

Origins: a fork that appeared the day after yuzu died

yuzu settled with Nintendo and shut down on March 4, 2024. On March 5, Suyu forked from yuzu's last build, EA-4176. Unlike yuzu, Suyu required users to supply their own firmware and title.keys, and it adopted a strict no-donations policy, both meant to avoid yuzu's legal problems.

The pressure came fast:

  • 2024-03-21: GitLab took down Suyu's repository under the DMCA. The project moved to a self-hosted Forgejo server.
  • April 2024: Discord banned the Suyu server and its main developers' accounts.
  • Developers left over time, and parts of the community criticized the code quality.
  • 2025-02-13: the project announced it was ending development.

The original team's last release: v0.0.4 Final Edition

A year and a half later, original developer Crimson-Hawk released v0.0.4 "Final Edition" (2026-09-04, marked as a pre-release). Emulation General Wiki says it added Qlauncher menu support and a Libretro core. Boiling Steam adds that it included a static AArch64-to-x86-64 recompiler, which translates Switch game code ahead of time so a PC can run it more directly.

On September 13, 2026, an administrator marked the Suyu organization as archived and no longer maintained. Note that this applies to the old repositories: suyu-main and Drippu in the same organization were not archived and still had commits in late October.

The new team: suyu-main

suyu-main was created on September 10, 2026. It describes itself as "suyu - the next era" and is led by DougChanSan and SourCreamCulture, who are newcomers rather than original Suyu developers.

  • Version: v14.1.0 (2026-10-12) as of October 2026. The numbering jumped from v0.0.14 to v14.0.1, so "14" doesn't mean it is more mature than Eden.
  • Feature: it can export games as Static or Hybrid packages, with game code translated ahead of time and bundled in. This builds on the recompilation idea from v0.0.4.
  • Platforms: the team tested on Linux (RTX 3090), Windows (RX 9070 XT) and macOS (Apple M5 via MoltenVK). Android support is unconfirmed. The info box marks all three desktop platforms as beta.

The experimental branch: Drippu

Drippu calls itself "suyu experimental": a C++ Switch emulator plus an AArch64 native recompiler. As of October 2026 it only has automated builds (v0.0.5, latest 2026-10-13). Its repository includes iOS research, and a JIT-free core already compiles for iPhone, but it is not an app you can install and use. Boiling Steam described it as very active but unclear whether it is going anywhere.

Both suyu-main and Drippu sit under the Suyu organization and are run by people who joined in or after September 2026. How they split the work has not been explained.

The DMCA notices keep coming

Nintendo's 2026-02-12 DMCA notice to GitHub named Suyu. On 2026-08-17 Nintendo filed seven notices in one day, and the Suyu fork network alone lost about 300 repositories (289+ in GitHub's published notice, 311 by Boiling Steam's count). suyu-main and Drippu are still hosted on GitHub, so further takedowns can't be ruled out.

Pros and cons

Pros: experiments with ahead-of-time translation that could approach native speed; active new maintainers.

Cons: a new, immature team with compatibility and stability well behind Eden; hosted on a platform that keeps removing these projects; three similarly named branches that are easy to confuse.

FAQ

Is Suyu dead?

The original project is. It announced the end of development on 2025-02-13 and was archived after v0.0.4 Final Edition in September 2026. New maintainers carry on under the name suyu-main. As of October 2026 its latest release is v14.1.0 (2026-10-12).

Is suyu-main official?

suyu-main lives in the same organization as the original project, describes itself as suyu - the next era, and is led by DougChanSan and SourCreamCulture. It is a continuation by newcomers, not the original team.

What's the difference between Drippu and suyu-main?

suyu-main is the desktop emulator meant for actual use. Drippu calls itself suyu experimental, focuses on an AArch64 native recompiler, and only has automated builds. The maintainers have not explained how the two projects divide the work.

Is there a Suyu iOS version?

No usable one. The Drippu repository has iOS research, and a JIT-free core already compiles for iOS, but it is not an installable app.

Was Suyu sued by Nintendo?

No lawsuit, but repeated DMCA takedowns: GitLab removed its repo in 2024 and Discord banned its server; the 2026-02-12 notice named Suyu; and about 300 Suyu-related repos were taken down on 2026-08-17.

Suyu or Eden?

Use Eden for everyday play: frequent updates, high compatibility, and mature Windows and Android builds. suyu-main is for people curious about ahead-of-time recompilation.
