Switch Emulator on Mac: Ryubing, Kenji-NX, Astris or Eden on Apple Silicon (October 2026)
Key points
- As of October 2026, Ryubing is the safest start on Apple silicon Macs: a universal build that its docs say runs many games well. It has been maintenance-only since February 2026.
- Astris is a Ryujinx fork built only for Apple silicon (1.0.32, macOS 15+). Kenji-NX has a Mac build but updates have slowed. Eden's Mac build is officially experimental.
- macOS has no native Vulkan, so these emulators run through MoltenVK, which translates Vulkan to Metal and costs some compatibility.
- nxnative is not an emulator: it turns one game into a native Mac app. Building needs macOS 26.6+ and Xcode 27.2; its site lists 109 playable games.
- Intel Macs are a poor fit: Ryubing reports many issues, Eden ships no Intel Mac build, and Astris and nxnative are Apple silicon only.

As of October 2026, the safest way to play Switch games on an Apple silicon Mac (M1 or newer) is Ryubing. It ships a universal build and its docs say "many games run well" on Apple silicon, although the project has been maintenance-only since February 2026. Alternatives are Astris, a fork made only for Apple silicon; Kenji-NX, whose updates have slowed; and Eden, which calls its Mac build experimental. A separate route is nxnative: it is not an emulator but turns a single game into a native Mac app. Intel Macs are mostly out of luck.
Why Apple silicon works well
The Switch CPU and Apple silicon both use ARM64, so a Mac doesn't always have to translate game code instruction by instruction:
- Ryujinx has used macOS's Hypervisor to run game ARM code directly since its macOS release in November 2022, which is much faster than pure translation. Ryubing keeps this as the "Use Hypervisor" option in CPU settings.
- Eden uses NCE (native code execution) on Android, but macOS support is still in the works.
- nxnative goes further: it rewrites the game code when you build, so it runs fully native.
Which one to pick
| Option | Type | Version (as of 2026-10-30) | Mac requirement | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ryubing | Emulator, Ryujinx line | Stable 1.3.3 (2025-10-11), Canary 1.3.351 (2026-08-26) | macOS 12+, universal build, best on Apple silicon | Maintenance-only |
| Astris | Emulator, Ryujinx fork | 1.0.32 (2026-10-09) | macOS 15+, Apple silicon only | Active |
| Kenji-NX | Emulator, Ryujinx fork | Desktop 2.0.5 (2025-10-06) | Universal build | Slowed, downloads limited |
| Eden | Emulator, yuzu line | Stable v0.2.1 (2026-06-01) | Apple silicon (arm64 DMG) | Experimental |
| nxnative | Native port, not an emulator | Rolling (since 2026-10-13) | Building needs macOS 26.6+, Xcode 27.2 | Very active |
Two early projects also exist: Citron Neo has macOS nightlies (2026-10-26), and Hydra renders through Metal directly, though its README says most games still crash.
Set up Ryubing (recommended start)
- Download the macOS universal build from the official site, ryujinx.app. Sites like ryubing.org are not official; see fake emulator sites.
- Extract it and open Ryujinx.app. If macOS says the developer can't be verified, go to System Settings > Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.
- Open File > Open Ryujinx Folder, go into
system, add prod.keys (and title.keys), then restart Ryubing. - Open Tools > Install Firmware > Install from XCI/ZIP and pick your firmware. The bottom-right corner then shows the System Version.
- Go to Options > Settings > User Interface > Game Directories > Add, add your games folder and Save.
- Map controls under Options > Settings > Input. With "Enable Docked Mode" checked, configure Player 1; unchecked, configure Handheld.
- Double-click a game. The first launch compiles shaders and builds the translation cache; PPTC kicks in from the third launch on.
For what keys and firmware are, see keys and firmware explained.
Ryubing on Mac: what to know
- Hypervisor: "Use Hypervisor" in CPU settings is a big speedup, but Ryubing's issue tracker in 2026 has many reports tied to it, from crashes on game launch to heavy graphics glitches. Leave it on, and turn it off if a game crashes or glitches. The official FAQ gives the same fix for Animal Crossing and Breath of the Wild crashes on ARM Macs.
- Vulkan (MoltenVK) is the only backend, and there are no GPU accuracy or async shader options.
- Audio: for any audio problem, softlock or crash on Mac, the docs say set the audio backend to SDL2.
- Crash with ESR 0x82000086: the docs say your macOS is too old; update it.
- It can't run inside a virtual machine.
- Canary builds after 1.3.295 have reports of crashing at launch on macOS 26.5. If you hit that, use stable 1.3.3.
Updates, DLC, mods and saves
- Updates and DLC: Ryubing mounts them instead of installing to NAND. Right-click a game > Manage Title Updates > Add, select the version, Save. DLC uses Manage DLC. You can also set a folder for automatic loading in settings.
- Mods: right-click a game > Manage Mods > Add and pick the extracted mod folder; it is enabled by default. If a mod does nothing, the game version usually doesn't match.
- Cheats: all disabled by default; tick them in right-click > Manage Cheats. Cheats are tied to a game version.
- Saves: right-click a game > Open User Save Directory. Saves work across emulators and devices, so you can copy one over from a Windows PC or Steam Deck.
- Some users report that Tears of the Kingdom with UltraCam-style graphics mods only boots with Hypervisor on, or with the memory mode set to Software. That is the opposite of the "turn Hypervisor off" advice above, so decide per game.
Pro Controller, DS4, DS5 and Xbox controllers work natively. The docs suggest a stick deadzone of at least 0.20.
Astris and Kenji-NX
- Astris by V380-Ori supports Apple silicon only, needs macOS 15 or later, and its latest release is 1.0.32 (2026-10-09). It ships as binaries, and there is no official word on whether the source is public. Emulation General Wiki lists it as active but does not recommend it. It is based on Ryujinx, so keys, firmware and game folders work the same way as in Ryubing; follow the menus you see.
- Kenji-NX by KeatonTheBot keeps an interface closer to the original Ryujinx, and desktop 2.0.5 has a universal build. Its README says automated builds are paused, and Boiling Steam reported on 2026-10-16 that the site is up but downloads are closed.
Set up Eden (experimental)
- Download the macOS arm64 DMG from the official site, eden-emu.dev, and drag Eden into Applications.
- If Gatekeeper blocks the first launch: System Settings > Privacy & Security > Open Anyway in the Security section > Open Anyway again > enter your password. Later launches won't ask.
- Use Tools > Install Decryption Keys for prod.keys and Tools > Install Firmware for firmware, then double-click the main window to add your games folder.
Eden's docs say macOS support is still experimental and "very reliant on MoltenVK developments," and its release notes warn of severe graphics bugs and crashes. It's for people who like to tinker.
nxnative: turning a game into a native Mac app (concept)
nxnative was October 2026's breakout project, and its authors are clear that it is not an emulator:
- It rewrites the game's own ARM64 code to run directly on the Apple chip, with a host layer standing in for the Switch OS to provide threads, memory, files, audio and other services.
- The game's graphics calls are reimplemented on Metal, and shaders are converted when you build.
- The result is one app per game: build with the Mac app option and you get an app you can open from Finder.
Requirements (nxnative.dev, as of 2026-10-30):
| Item | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Build Mac | macOS 26.6+, Xcode 27.2, Homebrew, ARM64 Python 3.12+ |
| Disk space | About twice the game size plus 10GB |
| Time | 30–60 minutes for the first build; later builds reuse finished work |
| Your own files | The base game (optionally updates and DLC) and prod.keys; the project includes no games or keys |
| Tested games | 109 playable, 19 of them upgraded to 60 fps |
| Limits | No amiibo or online features; games outside the catalog get a best-effort build that may not start |
If you'd rather avoid the terminal, nxnative's site lists community GUI tools such as NX2Apple and NX Play. They are not part of the official project.
What MoltenVK is
macOS has no native Vulkan. MoltenVK is a layer that translates Vulkan calls to Apple's Metal:
- Ryubing, Kenji-NX, Eden and Citron Neo all go through MoltenVK on Mac.
- Hydra and nxnative use Metal directly.
- An extra translation layer costs compatibility, as Eden's docs note. A game showing glitches on Mac that it doesn't show on Windows is not unusual.
Memory
| Topic | What we know |
|---|---|
| Official requirement | No Mac-specific one. Ryubing's general minimum is 8GB; Eden's PC table says 8GB minimum, 16GB recommended |
| Unified memory | Apple silicon's GPU and CPU share memory, so graphics memory comes out of the same pool, much like a PC's integrated graphics |
| 8GB Macs | They run, with little headroom. There is no official 8GB versus 16GB comparison. Stay at 1x and close other apps |
| Settings | Leave memory-related options at default. Ryubing's rule is to leave alone anything its guide doesn't mention |
Intel Macs
- Ryubing: its docs say Intel Macs have many issues (old drivers). For Intel Macs with an AMD GPU or a newer Intel iGPU, it suggests Linux or Boot Camp Windows.
- Eden: its docs say Intel Macs are "believed to be supported" but get no builds, and performance will likely be awful on anything but the highest-end iMacs and Pro-level Macs.
- Astris and nxnative: Apple silicon only.
- Hydra: ships an x86 build since v0.4.1, but the project is very early.
Suggested settings (Apple silicon)
This table is our summary of the official guidance; the projects publish no Mac tiers.
| Mac | Suggestion |
|---|---|
| M1 / M2 with 8GB | Ryubing at 1x; Hypervisor on, off if a game crashes or glitches; audio backend SDL2 |
| M1 Pro / Max, M2 Pro or better, 16GB+ | Ryubing or Astris at 1x–2x; otherwise the same |
| Curious about Eden | Treat it as an experiment; switch back to Ryubing when you hit glitches |
| A game on nxnative's list | Try building it as a native app with nxnative |

FAQ
What is the best Switch emulator for Mac?
As of October 2026, start with Ryubing on Apple silicon. It ships a universal build, and its docs say many games run well on Apple silicon. Astris, made only for Apple silicon, is worth a try too. Eden's Mac build is officially experimental.
Can an 8GB M1 or M2 Mac run Switch games?
Yes, but with little headroom. There is no Mac-specific memory requirement, only the general 'at least 8GB', and no official 8GB versus 16GB comparison. On 8GB machines keep the resolution at 1x, close other apps and leave memory settings at default.
Ryubing crashes or glitches with Hypervisor on. What now?
Hypervisor runs game code directly on the Apple chip and is much faster, but 2026 brought many crash and graphics reports tied to it. Leave it on at first; if a game crashes or glitches, turn off Use Hypervisor in CPU settings and retry. For audio problems, switch the audio backend to SDL2.
Can an Intel Mac play Switch games?
Barely. Ryubing's docs say Intel Macs have many issues and suggest Linux or Boot Camp Windows on them. Eden provides no Intel Mac build, and Astris and nxnative support Apple silicon only.
Is nxnative an emulator? What does it need?
No. nxnative rewrites one game's code to run directly on the Apple chip and redraws its graphics with Metal. Building needs a Mac on macOS 26.6 or later with Xcode 27.2, plus game files and prod.keys. The first build takes 30 to 60 minutes. It has no amiibo or online support.
macOS says the app can't be verified. How do I open it?
Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security, click Open Anyway in the Security section, confirm once more and enter your password. Eden's docs describe exactly this, and later launches won't ask again.
