shadPS4 Steam Deck and Linux Setup: AppImage, Flatpak and Game Mode (November 2026)
Key points
- As of November 1, 2026, shadPS4 runs natively on Linux, including Steam Deck. Linux has the most games marked Playable in the official compatibility list, about 210.
- Two ways to install: the official QtLauncher AppImage (switch versions in its Version Manager) or the Flathub Flatpak net.shadps4.shadPS4 (fixed version, still v0.20.0 on 2026-11-01).
- On Steam Deck, install in Desktop Mode, then use Add a Non-Steam Game for Game Mode. The Flatpak can already read home, /media and /run/media, so SD card games need no extra permissions.
- PC Gamer (November 2025, shadPS4 0.12.6): Bloodborne on a Steam Deck OLED often hugs 60fps unlocked in handheld mode, dips to about 40 in big fights, and holds a locked 30 docked.
- For Bloodborne only, there is also bbport: a native port of Bloodborne 1.09 with an AppImage that works on Steam Deck. It is still experimental.
On this page
As of November 1, 2026, the way to play PS4 games on a Linux PC or Steam Deck is shadPS4. It runs natively on Linux, and Linux has the most games marked Playable in the official compatibility list (about 210, versus about 160 on Windows). There are two ways to install it: the QtLauncher AppImage from the official site (lets you switch versions) or the Flatpak on Flathub (net.shadps4.shadPS4, fixed version). On Steam Deck, install in Desktop Mode, then add it to Game Mode. If you only want Bloodborne, there's also a native port just for that game, bbport.
AppImage or Flatpak?
| Official AppImage (QtLauncher) | Flathub Flatpak | |
|---|---|---|
| Install | Get the Linux build from the official Downloads page, extract, run | Discover store or flatpak install |
| Emulator version | Any stable or nightly via Version Manager | Locked to the bundled stable release |
| Current version (2026-11-01) | v0.21.0 / daily nightlies | v0.20.0 |
| Updates | Download new builds in the launcher | With your system updates |
| Data folder | ~/.local/share/shadPS4 | ~/.var/app/net.shadps4.shadPS4/data/shadPS4 |
| Best for | People who want the latest fixes and to try other builds | People who want it simple |
Flathub's own description is blunt: the Flatpak's launcher is preset to the bundled emulator and cannot download or run other versions. For version choice, use the official AppImage.
Requirements
Official minimums: an x86-64-v3 (AVX2) CPU with 4 cores / 6 threads, a Vulkan 1.3 GPU with 2GB+ VRAM, 8GB RAM, and Ubuntu 22.04 or a similarly recent distro. Keep GPU drivers current; on AMD and Intel the distro's Mesa drivers are what you want. The Steam Deck meets every hard requirement. Tiers are in PS4 emulator PC requirements.
Install on desktop Linux (AppImage)
- On shadps4.net, open Downloads and get the Linux QtLauncher (the file name contains
linux). Extract it to your own folder, such as~/Applications/shadPS4/. - Make the AppImage executable: tick "Allow executing file as program" in its properties, or run
chmod +x shadPS4QtLauncher-qt.AppImage. - Run
shadPS4QtLauncher-qt.AppImage. - Click Version manager at the top right and download an emulator build (start with the latest stable).
- Settings, Paths, Game Folders: add the folder that holds your games.
Keep the program and games out of directories that need root. The wiki says that causes strange problems.
Install on Steam Deck
Step 1: install in Desktop Mode
- Press the power button and choose Switch to Desktop.
- Pick one:
- Flatpak: open Discover, search for shadPS4, check that the developer is shadPS4 Contributors and the app ID is
net.shadps4.shadPS4, then install. - AppImage: download the Linux QtLauncher from the official site in a browser, follow the desktop Linux steps above, then download an emulator build in Version manager.
- Flatpak: open Discover, search for shadPS4, check that the developer is shadPS4 Contributors and the app ID is
- Open shadPS4 and add your game folders in Settings, Paths. SD cards live under
/run/media/, and the Flatpak can read home,/mediaand/run/mediaby default. If your games are elsewhere, add the path with Flatseal. - Launch a game once in Desktop Mode to confirm it boots.
Step 2: add it to Game Mode
- In Desktop Mode, open Steam, click Add a Game at the bottom left, then Add a Non-Steam Game.
- For the Flatpak, tick shadPS4 in the list. For the AppImage, click Browse and pick
shadPS4QtLauncher-qt.AppImage. - Back in Game Mode, launch it from the Non-Steam section of your library. The Flatpak manifest includes a permission specifically for Gamescope on Steam Deck.
- To drive the launcher with a controller in Game Mode, try the QtLauncher's Big Picture view (v0.20.0 added recursive folder scanning to it).
The QtLauncher's right-click menu also has Add to Steam, which adds a single game to your Steam library so it launches straight from Game Mode.
EmuDeck
EmuDeck added shadPS4 in January 2025 (reported by Steam Deck HQ), installing the AppImage and launching it through ES-DE or Steam ROM Manager. shadPS4 has since moved its GUI to the QtLauncher, and as of November 2026 we found no official word on which build EmuDeck installs now or whether it can switch versions. If it gives you trouble, use the manual install above.
Where the files are
| Content | AppImage | Flatpak |
|---|---|---|
| User folder | ~/.local/share/shadPS4 | ~/.var/app/net.shadps4.shadPS4/data/shadPS4 |
| Firmware modules | sys_modules in the user folder | Same |
| Saves | home/1000/savedata/<title ID> in the user folder | Same |
| Log | log/shad_log.txt in the user folder | Same |
If there's a user folder next to the program, the AppImage uses it instead (portable mode). If XDG_DATA_HOME is set, the user folder is $XDG_DATA_HOME/shadPS4. Games, updates (CUSAxxxxx-patch), DLC and firmware modules use the same layout as on Windows; see the Windows guide.
Recommended Steam Deck settings
| Setting | Recommended | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Enable Shader Cache | On | Off by default; without it you stutter every time you enter a new area |
| Display Mode | Fullscreen or Fullscreen (Borderless) | F11 toggles |
| Present Mode | Mailbox (default); Fifo when capping at 30 | Fifo is strict vsync |
| Resolution | Native, or a patch down to 720p | The Deck's screen is 1280x800; Digital Foundry used a 720p resolution patch on the ROG Xbox Ally X to gain frame rate |
| Frame rate | Start capped at 30, then try unlock patches | PC Gamer's Bloodborne report: often near 60 unlocked in handheld, about 40 in big fights, locked 30 docked |
| Readbacks Mode | Disabled | Costs CPU; only enable when a game needs it |
| Steam performance overlay | Leave TDP uncapped at first | Emulation is CPU-heavy; on the Ally X, DF saw about 10% less performance and more stutter going from 35W to 25W |
Resolution and frame rate patches are under right-click, Cheats / Patches, and vary by game. DF's Bloodborne setup on the ROG Xbox Ally X: chromatic aberration off, the TaskSplit patch, Model LOD -2, the Uncap FPS (delta time) mod and a 720p resolution patch, giving 50 to 70fps at 35W on the charger, versus 33 to 40fps at native 1080p. The Steam Deck is slower than the Ally X, so treat that as a starting point. More values in shadPS4 settings and crash fixes.
Bloodborne only: bbport
bbport appeared in October 2026 and supports only Bloodborne 1.09. It works differently from shadPS4: the game's x86-64 code runs directly on your CPU, and only the graphics are translated to Vulkan (the renderer started from shadPS4's and was rewritten).
- It supports Linux and, since 0.7 (2026-10-28), Windows. Its AppImage can be added as a non-Steam game in Steam Deck Game Mode, with a 720p output option.
- The author calls it "experimental, playable" and says a full playthrough hasn't been verified. Game Rant's hands-on (2026-10-09) saw averages above 100fps at 1440p but said a reliable Steam Deck version is still a ways off.
- It isn't part of the shadPS4 project; ask in bbport's own community.
Other Linux handhelds and PCs
- ROG Ally or Legion Go on SteamOS or Bazzite: same steps as the Steam Deck.
- Desktop Linux: Linux has the most Playable games in the compatibility list. AMD cards work with the distro's Mesa drivers.
- Debugging: RenderDoc doesn't support Wayland; launch with
SDL_VIDEODRIVER=x11when you need it. Normal play doesn't require this.
The PS5 emulators SharpEmu and KytyPS5 have Linux builds too, both early. Other PC topics are on the PS PC hub.
FAQ
Can the Steam Deck play PS4 games?
Yes, with shadPS4. It runs natively on Linux, and SteamOS can install either the official AppImage or the Flathub Flatpak. Performance depends on the game: PC Gamer reported that on shadPS4 0.12.6, Bloodborne on a Steam Deck OLED often hugs 60fps unlocked in handheld mode, dips to about 40 in big fights, and holds a locked 30 docked. Many games still don't reach gameplay, so check the compatibility list first.
Should I use the AppImage or the Flatpak?
Use the official AppImage if you want the newest builds and the ability to switch versions; its Version Manager can download any stable or nightly build. Use the Flatpak if you want Discover to handle updates, but its launcher is locked to the bundled version and updates arrive days to weeks after the official site.
The Flatpak can't see games on my SD card. What do I do?
The Flatpak already has access to home, /media and /run/media, and the Steam Deck mounts SD cards under /run/media, so it usually works. If your games are somewhere else, use a tool like Flatseal to give net.shadps4.shadPS4 access to that path.
Can I install shadPS4 through EmuDeck?
EmuDeck added shadPS4 in January 2025, installing the AppImage. shadPS4 has since split its GUI into the separate QtLauncher, and we couldn't find an official note on how EmuDeck handles that now. If it gives you trouble, install the official AppImage by hand.
For Bloodborne on Steam Deck, shadPS4 or bbport?
shadPS4 is a general emulator, so you can try any game, and its Bloodborne support is the most mature. bbport is a native port of Bloodborne 1.09 only: the game's CPU code runs directly and only graphics are translated. It has a Steam Deck-ready AppImage but is still experimental; Game Rant said in October 2026 that a reliable Deck version is still a ways off. You can install both; they keep saves in different places.
Does shadPS4 have problems on Wayland?
The official docs only say the debugging tool RenderDoc doesn't work on Wayland and needs SDL_VIDEODRIVER=x11. Nothing says to avoid Wayland for normal play. The Flatpak includes both Wayland and X11 permissions.
