shadPS4 on Mac: PS4 Emulator Setup for Apple Silicon (November 2026)
Key points
- As of November 1, 2026, the PS4 emulator that works on Mac is shadPS4. It needs Apple Silicon (M1 or newer) and macOS 26 or later. Intel Macs are not supported.
- The Mac build is an x86-64 app running under Rosetta 2, with graphics going through KosmicKrisp (a Vulkan-on-Metal driver). KosmicKrisp is built on Metal 4, which is why macOS 26 is required.
- Two translation layers make Macs slower than similar Windows or Linux PCs. In the official compatibility list, about 40 games are Playable on macOS, versus about 160 on Windows and 210 on Linux.
- Install the macOS QtLauncher from the official site. If macOS blocks it, go to System Settings, Privacy & Security, and click Open Anyway. Data lives in ~/Library/Application Support/shadPS4.
- Use Command instead of Control, and Command+F11 for fullscreen. The PS5 emulator KytyPS5 has an experimental Mac build that gets only a few games in-game.

As of November 1, 2026, the PS4 emulator for Mac is shadPS4. It needs Apple Silicon (M1 or newer) and macOS 26 or later; Intel Macs are not supported. The Mac build is an x86-64 app that runs under Apple's Rosetta 2, and its graphics go from Vulkan to Metal through KosmicKrisp. It works, but compatibility and speed are clearly behind a comparable Windows or Linux PC: about 40 games in the official compatibility list are marked Playable on macOS, compared with about 160 on Windows and 210 on Linux (counted by test platform on 2026-11-01).
Where things stand on Mac
| Item | Status (2026-11-01) |
|---|---|
| Supported Macs | Apple Silicon (M1 or newer) |
| OS | macOS 26 or newer |
| Intel Macs | Not supported |
| CPU side | The Mac build is x86-64 and runs under Rosetta 2 |
| Graphics | Vulkan, then KosmicKrisp, then Metal |
| Latest version | v0.21.0 (2026-10-30), released alongside Windows and Linux |
Why macOS 26: shadPS4 ships Mesa's KosmicKrisp as its Vulkan driver on Mac. The Mesa docs say it is built on Metal 4, which only exists on macOS 26 and later. LunarG also states it does not support Intel Macs or anything before macOS 26.
Why it's slower: the PS4 uses an AMD x86-64 CPU, so game code is x86. A Windows or Linux PC runs those instructions directly; a Mac has Rosetta 2 translate them first. The PS4's CPU also has instructions (SSE4a) that neither Intel chips nor Rosetta support, so shadPS4 rewrites them. v0.20.0 added full SSE4a patching on macOS, and v0.21.0 worked around several Rosetta 2 mistranslations and crashes.
Requirements
| Part | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Chip | Apple M1 or newer (any M1 to M5 model) |
| OS | macOS 26 or newer |
| Memory | 8GB official minimum (unified memory, shared with the GPU) |
| Other | Rosetta 2; free space for your games |
There's no official Mac-specific recommendation. Unified memory serves both CPU and GPU, so 8GB is tight; 16GB or more gives more room, but no public comparison exists. General requirements are in PS4 emulator PC requirements.
Install shadPS4
- Check that you're on macOS 26 or newer (Apple menu, About This Mac).
- On shadps4.net, open Downloads and get the macOS QtLauncher (the file name contains
macos). Unzip it. - Open shadPS4QtLauncher. The first time, a "shadPS4QtLauncher Not Opened" window appears; click Done.
- Open the Apple menu, System Settings, Privacy & Security. Scroll to "shadPS4QtLauncher was blocked to protect your Mac" and click Open Anyway. Click Open Anyway again in the dialog and confirm with your password or Touch ID.
- If Rosetta 2 has never been installed, macOS prompts you the first time you run an Intel app. Click Install.
- In the launcher, use Version manager (top right) to download an emulator build. Start with the latest stable.
- Settings, Paths, Game Folders: add the folder that holds your games.
Where the files are
On Mac, shadPS4 keeps its data in ~/Library/Application Support/shadPS4 by default (in Finder press Command+Shift+G and paste the path). If there's a user folder next to the program, it uses that instead (portable mode). The layout matches Windows:
| Folder | Contents |
|---|---|
sys_modules | PS4 firmware modules (.sprx); per-game ones go in sys_modules/<title ID>/ |
fonts | PS4 system fonts (font and font2 subfolders) |
home/1000/savedata/<title ID> | Saves |
log/shad_log.txt | Log (latest session only) |
custom_configs | Per-game settings |
patches, cheats | Patches and cheats |
Games are extracted CUSAxxxxx folders (with eboot.bin inside), updates sit next to them as CUSAxxxxx-patch, and DLC goes in a folder named after the game under your DLC Path. It all works the same as on Windows; see the folder layout and firmware module sections of the Windows guide.
Mac keyboard differences
- Any shortcut that uses Control uses Command on Mac.
- Fullscreen is Command+F11 to avoid clashing with system shortcuts. F10 shows FPS.
- Some keyboards need Fn held for the F keys.
- The developers say Xbox and DualShock controllers work out of the box.
Recommended settings (Apple Silicon)
| Setting | Recommended | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Emulator version | Latest stable; try a nightly if needed | Rosetta 2 fixes have landed in recent versions |
| Enable Shader Cache | On | First-visit shader stutter only happens once |
| Present Mode | Mailbox (default) | Try Fifo if you see tearing or uneven frame pacing |
| Readbacks Mode | Disabled | Costs performance; only enable when a game needs it |
| Enable FSR | Optional | Upscales when the window is bigger than the game's resolution; doesn't raise internal resolution |
| PS4 Neo Mode | Off | The developers say it's unstable in many games |
| Additional DMem Allocation | 0 | Uses more unified memory and crashes some games |
Higher resolutions and unlocked frame rates come from per-game patches (right-click a game, Cheats / Patches). Macs have little performance headroom, so confirm a game is stable at native resolution first. More settings and error fixes: shadPS4 settings and crash fixes.
Bloodborne and PS5 games
- Bloodborne: besides shadPS4, there are a few Bloodborne Mac ports built on bbport and shadPS4 code. As of November 2026 they're individual experiments on GitHub with no reliable public testing, so we don't cover them here. See the Bloodborne page for every platform.
- PS5: KytyPS5 has an experimental Mac build, also under Rosetta 2, with MoltenVK for graphics. Its developers say only a few games have been verified in-game on Apple Silicon. SharpEmu's main app supports Windows and Linux only; its Mac version is a separate experimental project started in October 2026 that renders with Metal, with no reliable game testing reported as of November 1.
Without emulation: streaming
If you own a PS4 or PS5, Sony's official PS Remote Play streams the console to your Mac. The game runs on the console, so Mac performance and emulator compatibility don't matter. Sony requires at least 5Mbps and recommends 15Mbps.

FAQ
Does shadPS4 work on Intel Macs?
No. The shadPS4 team says Intel Macs are not supported and requires Apple Silicon (M1 or newer) with macOS 26. One reason is its Vulkan driver, KosmicKrisp, which is built on Metal 4 and only supports Apple Silicon Macs on macOS 26 or later.
My Mac is still on macOS 15. Can I install shadPS4?
Current builds (November 2026) need macOS 26 or newer. Before upgrading, check that the other apps you rely on support the new version.
Why are PS4 games slower on a Mac than on a Windows PC?
The PS4 is x86-64 and Apple Silicon is ARM. On a Mac, Rosetta 2 first translates the x86 code to ARM, then graphics are converted from Vulkan to Metal. Both layers cost performance. v0.20.0 and v0.21.0 fixed several Rosetta 2 problems, but compatibility and speed still trail Windows and Linux.
Can an 8GB M1 Mac run PS4 games?
It can start them; 8GB is the official minimum. But Mac unified memory is shared with the GPU, so 8GB leaves little headroom and bigger 3D games are more likely to stutter or crash. There's no official Mac-specific memory advice and no public 8GB vs. 16GB comparison.
Can a Mac play PS5 games?
Only experimentally. KytyPS5 has a Mac build that runs under Rosetta 2 with MoltenVK, and its developers say only a few games have reached gameplay on Apple Silicon. SharpEmu's main app is Windows and Linux only; its Mac version is a separate experimental project started in October 2026.
Is there a way to play PS4 or PS5 games on a Mac without emulation?
If you own a PS4 or PS5, Sony's official PS Remote Play app streams the console to your Mac. The game runs on the console; Sony recommends at least 15Mbps.
