MeloNX 2.7 Released: The iOS Switch Emulator Works Around the Memory Cap and Adds MetalFX

Published 2 min read

Key points

  • MeloNX 2.7 shipped on Oct 11, 2026. The headline change moves game memory into an NSExtension process via shared memory to work around iOS's per-app memory limit.
  • 2.7 also adds in-app controller remapping, controller navigation, experimental Steam Controller support, iOS 27 AirPlay, MetalFX spatial upscaling and BCn-to-ETC2 texture recompression.
  • 2.4 (Jul 10, 2026) rewrote the app and core on top of Ryubing and added iOS 26.6/27 support. 2.5 (Jul 19) fixed audio stutter and saves; 2.6 (Aug 26) switched audio backends and updated TXM detection.
  • MeloNX still requires JIT, which on iOS 26 means StikDebug. An iPhone 15 Pro or newer is recommended.

MeloNX, the Switch emulator for iPhone and iPad, released version 2.7 on October 11, 2026. The big change is a workaround for iOS's per-app memory limit: using an NSExtension and shared memory, it moves the game's memory into an extension process. The release also adds in-app controller remapping, MetalFX upscaling and AirPlay support on iOS 27. It's the fourth release since the July rewrite on Ryubing.

What's new in 2.7

From the 2.7 release notes on MeloNX's official code server:

  • Memory limit workaround: NSExtensions plus xpc_shmem hold guest memory in an extension process, and that shared memory doesn't count toward the main app's physical footprint. The notes point out that this won't be reflected in the in-app memory limit tester.
  • Controllers: full in-app button remapping, controller navigation in the game list, and experimental Steam Controller support via CoreBluetooth.
  • Graphics: MetalFX spatial upscaling; BCn-to-ETC2 recompression for GPUs without BCn texture support; improved async shader compilation; GPU buffer eviction under memory pressure; a new anti-aliasing setting.
  • System: AirPlay support on iOS 27; audio fixes in some games; firmware import moved off the main thread with better error reporting.
  • Other: better per-game settings, an "Open Save Folder" option, and fixes such as virtual control opacity.

On the iPhone 15 Pro and newer models MeloNX recommends, iOS caps an app at 6 GB of memory, which has long been the bottleneck for big games. How much the 2.7 workaround helps will depend on testing across devices.

2.4 to 2.6: rewrite first, then patch

VersionDateHighlights
2.42026-07-10App and core fully rewritten on Ryubing; iOS 26.6 / 27 support; JIT cache improvements; experimental HD Rumble; keyboard mapping; better per-game settings; SDL2 to SDL3; experimental async shaders
2.52026-07-19Fixes for audio stutter, cheats, saves, updates and DLC
2.62026-08-26New audio backend; updated TXM detection (TXM is the iOS 26 mechanism that restricts JIT)
2.72026-10-11Memory limit workaround, controller remapping, MetalFX, iOS 27 AirPlay

2.4 was the biggest change since MeloNX was announced. It started out based on Ryujinx; this time it was rebuilt on Ryubing, Ryujinx's community continuation.

Where the project stands

MeloNX's GitHub repository was named in Nintendo's February 2026 DMCA notice and is no longer reachable. The project first moved to Ryubing's code server, then in September moved its main repository to another self-hosted platform. The official site is melonx.org. Sites like melonx-emu.org are third parties, and modified builds with different bundle IDs aren't from the MeloNX team.

What this means for players

  • If you already use MeloNX, update to 2.7 from the official site. On iOS 26 you still need StikDebug for JIT, plus a script on TXM devices (A15/M2 and newer). See enabling JIT with StikDebug.
  • Installing for the first time? Follow the iPhone / iPad setup guide. The project recommends sideloading with Impactor and refreshing on-device with SideStore.
  • Thinking about iOS 27? Hold off for now. In early October StikDebug received reports of JIT failing on iOS 27.0, and there's no official word on a fix.

FAQ

What is the latest MeloNX version?

As of October 2026 it's 2.7 (Oct 11, 2026). Before that came 2.6 (Aug 26), 2.5 (Jul 19) and 2.4 (Jul 10, 2026).

Does MeloNX 2.7 get past the 6 GB memory limit?

The 2.7 notes say it uses an NSExtension and shared memory to hold guest memory in an extension process, which doesn't count toward the main app's memory footprint. The notes also say this won't show up in the in-app memory limit tester. How many more games it helps depends on real-world testing per device.

Can MeloNX run without JIT?

No. The official documentation says JIT is required. On iOS 26 you need StikDebug, and devices with TXM (A15/M2 and newer) also need a script.

Is melonx-emu.org the official site?

No. The official site is melonx.org. There are also modified MeloNX builds under different bundle IDs floating around; they aren't made by the MeloNX team.
