Free Switch Homebrew Games That Run on Emulators (Ryubing, Eden)
Key points
- Switch emulators can play free homebrew games. Get the .nro from the author's page (itch.io, the game's site or GitHub) and open it with Load File. No prod.keys, no firmware.
- On 2026-11-01 we got 19 homebrew games to a title screen or menu. 8 of them work on both Ryubing 1.3.3 and Eden v0.2.1.
- Top 5: SuperTuxKart (3D kart racing), SuDokuL (sudoku), COLD START (top-down shooter), ClanBomber 2 (Bomberman-style party game), Super Haxagon (rhythm dodging).
- "Are you missing firmware?" in Ryubing 1.3.3 (seen with 2048 and SuperTux) is an emulator bug, not missing firmware. Both games run fine in Eden.
- If a port closes right after launch, it usually can't find its data files. Copy them to the root of the emulator's virtual SD card.
On this page
You don't need to buy anything to play games on a Switch emulator. Many developers release their own games, or Switch ports of open-source games, as free homebrew (.nro files). Get the file from the author's own page (itch.io, the game's site or its GitHub page), open it with the emulator's Load File menu, and play. You don't need prod.keys or firmware. On 2026-11-01 we tested on Ryubing 1.3.3 and Eden v0.2.1. 19 games reached a title screen or menu, and 8 of them work on both.
The list: 19 homebrew games that boot
"Yes" means it reached a title screen or menu. "Yes (move data)" means it quits when opened directly, but works once you copy its data files to the virtual SD card root (see below). "No" means it crashed, showed a black screen or hung. As of November 2026.

If you only want one emulator, Eden runs 14 of these and Ryubing runs 13. With both installed, you can play all 19.
Top 5 picks
All five run on both emulators in our test. They're original or freely licensed, and each has had a release in the last year or two.
SuperTuxKart: open-source 3D kart racing
The best-known open-source kart racer. Tux the penguin and other open-source mascots race in story mode, Grand Prix and online multiplayer. The Switch build comes from the SuperTuxKart team itself: the official download page lists "Switch Homebrew", and every release since 1.3 ships a Switch archive. The latest is 1.5 (2025-10-20).
The archive is about 695 MB. It holds a switch folder (with stk.nro) and a stk-data folder. Put both in the root of the virtual SD card, or you'll get missing textures. On first launch it asks whether to download add-ons online. Both emulators reached the create-user screen in our test.
SuDokuL: clean, simple sudoku
A sudoku game by Mode8fx with a clean look, tracker music, and several themes and difficulty levels. The same author made Blockamok Remix. Both are on itch.io, with builds for PC, Android, Switch, Wii U and more. The code is MIT; the music, font and some art are credited third-party assets. It's a single .nro, and both emulators reached the "Press +" title screen. It's a good first test for a new emulator install.
COLD START: top-down shooter roguelike
A top-down survival shooter by etonedemid. It opens with a fake computer boot sequence, has a full map editor, and supports local and online multiplayer. The itch.io page lists it as free (name your own price), and the downloads include cold-start-nx.nro for Switch. The page was still being updated in late October 2026. In our test, Ryubing stopped at the boot animation and Eden reached the in-game login dialog.
ClanBomber 2: Bomberman-style party game
A Switch port of the classic open-source game ClanBomber 2, built for local multiplayer and bundled with a map editor. The porter's README says it was tested on Ryujinx and suyu: use File > Load Application From File and pick clanbomber.nro. v1.1 came out on 2026-05-14. Both emulators reached the main menu.
Super Haxagon: a tribute to Super Hexagon
An open-source game by RedTopper, made as a tribute to Terry Cavanagh's Super Hexagon. Rotate a small triangle, dodge hexagon walls closing in on the center, and stay on the beat. The sound effects, music and fonts are original or credited free-licensed assets. It also runs on 3DS, PC and other platforms. The latest release is 3.9.1 (2025-04-23), and both emulators reached the title screen.
More games that work
- Both emulators: Bouncy Brawl is a two-player game where bouncy balls knock each other off the stage. It's a new project and still rough. Hurrican is a 9-level side-scrolling shooter inspired by the Amiga-era Turrican, with its own art. Triplane Turmoil is a 1996 Finnish biplane dogfighting game, open-sourced in 2009, with a single-player campaign and split-screen versus. The last two need their data files moved first.
- Eden only: an early SuperTux (Milestone 1, not today's 0.6), a touch-friendly 2048, the software-rendered 3D block dodger Blockamok Remix, the minimalist ASCII roguelike Brogue CE, the physics puzzler Enigma (find matching Oxyd stones), and OpenTTD, a transport sim that ships with open-source graphics and sound (OpenGFX / OpenSFX) and works out of the box. The Brogue, Enigma and OpenTTD ports haven't been updated in years.
- Ryubing only: Pixel Wheels (top-down pixel racing, the best of this group), Unlucky (a turn-based RPG where everything rides on RNG), Pepper&Carrot Running Game (a runner set in David Revoy's CC-licensed webcomic) and Klooni 1010 (block puzzle). TheLogicMaster ported all four with SwitchGDX, and all four crash after about 24 seconds in Eden. There's also Flare: Empyrean Campaign, a Diablo-style action RPG with free-licensed art and music. It shows a black screen in Eden.
How to open a .nro file
- Get the Switch build from the page in the table. It's usually a zip with a .nro inside, sometimes with a data folder too.
- Extract it to the root of the emulator's virtual SD card (see the table below). A game that's just one .nro can live anywhere, but anything with data files must go here.
- Open it in the emulator:
- Ryubing: File > Load Application from File, then pick the .nro. Without keys, Ryubing shows a missing-keys notice at startup. Just close it.
- Eden: File > Load File, then pick the .nro. When it asks "Decryption keys are missing. Install them now?", choose No.
Where the virtual SD card lives:
| Emulator | Virtual SD card root | How to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Ryubing | sdcard in the data folder (portable builds: portable\sdcard next to the program) | File > Open Ryujinx Folder, then sdcard |
| Eden | sdmc in the data folder (default %AppData%\eden\sdmc, portable builds: user\sdmc next to the program) | Open Eden's data folder and look for sdmc |
For SuperTuxKart, you end up with sdcard\switch\stk.nro and sdcard\stk-data\ (or sdmc\... in Eden). Then open stk.nro from the switch folder.
None of these games need keys or firmware. A few homebrew apps use system fonts, time zones or network certificates from the firmware, and those parts may break without it. All 19 games here still reached their first screen. Ryubing logs "TimeZoneBinary system title not found!", but the game displays fine. For what retail games need and where it goes, see prod.keys and firmware explained.
Two common problems
"Are you missing firmware?" in Ryubing 1.3.3 isn't about firmware
In the Ryubing 1.3.3 stable release, some homebrew (2048 and SuperTux in our test) fails right away with:
The HLE Process map did not have a process with ID 0. Are you missing firmware?
It reads like a firmware problem, but it's a bug in 1.3.3. It triggers when the homebrew's metadata (NACP) sets a program ID. Ryubing fixed it in the development branch in May 2026, but as of November 2026 no stable release includes the fix. (We didn't test the Canary builds.) Both games run fine on Eden v0.2.1, so switch to Eden if you hit this.
A port quits right away: move its data to the SD card root
Many ports read their own data files. On a real Switch, the Homebrew Menu tells the app which folder it's in. When an emulator opens the .nro directly, the app doesn't get that path. It looks in the root of the virtual SD card, and if the files aren't there, it quits.
The fix: copy the data files from the game's folder to the virtual SD card root. Two cases we confirmed:
| Game | Copy this to the SD card root | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Hurrican | The data and lang folders from the Hurrican folder | Title animation on both emulators |
| Triplane Turmoil | fokker.dks | Intro screen on both emulators |
When picking games, single-file .nro games (like SuDokuL) are the least hassle. For other crashes and black screens, see the troubleshooting guide.
One more: the Homebrew Menu (nx-hbmenu) opens on both emulators but shows "Error: launchInit() failed." It needs the loader on a real console to list and launch other apps, so this doesn't mean your emulator is broken. To check a fresh install, SuDokuL or SuperTuxKart tells you more.
Tried, but didn't boot
These didn't reach a title screen on either Ryubing 1.3.3 or Eden v0.2.1 (crash, black screen or stuck loading): Lugaru HD, The Powder Toy, Rocks'n'Diamonds, Meritous, Blobby Volley 2, Pinball NX, Space Game NX.
How we tested
- Date: 2026-11-01. Windows 11 (i7-9700K, Intel UHD 630 integrated graphics, Vulkan).
- Emulators: Ryubing 1.3.3 stable (2025-10-11) and Eden v0.2.1 stable (2026-06-01), both from official sources. No keys and no firmware installed.
- All game files came from the authors' pages. We placed them on the virtual SD card per the authors' instructions and loaded the .nro with the open-file option.
- We waited 25 to 90 seconds per game and checked screenshots and logs. "Works" only means it reached a title screen or menu. We didn't play for long, and we didn't test controllers, saves or performance. Results apply to these two versions on this one PC.
For installing an emulator and setting up controllers on PC, see the Windows setup guide.
FAQ
Are there free games for Switch emulators?
Yes. Many developers release their own games, or Switch ports of open-source games, as free homebrew (.nro files). In November 2026 we got 19 of them to a title screen or menu on Ryubing 1.3.3 and Eden v0.2.1. Our top picks are SuperTuxKart, SuDokuL, COLD START, ClanBomber 2 and Super Haxagon.
Do I need keys or firmware to run Switch homebrew?
No. We tested Ryubing 1.3.3 and Eden v0.2.1 with no prod.keys and no firmware installed, and all 19 games reached a title screen or menu. Ryubing shows a missing-keys notice you can close. Eden asks whether to install keys; pick No. A few homebrew apps use system fonts, time zones or network certificates from the firmware, and those features may break without it.
How do I open a .nro file?
In Ryubing, use File > Load Application from File. In Eden, use File > Load File. Then pick the .nro. If the game ships with data files, first extract the whole archive to the root of the emulator's virtual SD card (the sdcard folder in Ryubing, sdmc in Eden), then open the .nro from there.
Ryubing says "Are you missing firmware?" when I open homebrew. What do I do?
You're not missing firmware. Ryubing 1.3.3 has a bug: homebrew that sets a program ID in its metadata (2048 and SuperTux in our test) fails with "The HLE Process map did not have a process with ID 0. Are you missing firmware?" It is fixed in the development branch, but as of November 2026 no stable release includes the fix. Use Eden for now; both games run fine on Eden v0.2.1.
Why does a homebrew game close right after I open it?
Many ports read their own data files. On a real Switch, the Homebrew Menu tells the app which folder it lives in. When an emulator opens the .nro directly, the app doesn't get that path, looks in the root of the virtual SD card, and quits if nothing is there. Copy the data files to the SD card root. This fixed Hurrican (copy the data and lang folders) and Triplane Turmoil (copy fokker.dks) on both emulators.
SuperTuxKart has missing textures in the emulator. How do I fix it?
The Switch build has stk.nro inside a switch folder plus a separate stk-data folder. Both must sit in the root of the virtual SD card. If you only copy the .nro, textures will be missing.
Which homebrew should I use to test a new emulator install?
SuDokuL or SuperTuxKart. Both run on Ryubing and Eden, and you can tell at a glance if things look right. Skip nx-hbmenu for this: in an emulator it shows "Error: launchInit() failed." because it needs the loader on a real console to list other apps. That error doesn't mean your emulator is broken.
Can I play these homebrew games with a controller?
We only checked whether each game reaches a title screen or menu. We did not test controller input, saves or performance. Controller setup works the same as for any other game; see the controller section of the Windows setup guide.
