Two Years of Switch Emulation on iPhone: From Apple's Emulator Rules to the iOS 26 JIT Problem (2024–2026)
Key points
- Apple has allowed emulators on the App Store since Apr 5, 2024, but App Store apps can't use JIT. As of Nov 2026, no Switch emulator is on the App Store.
- Switch emulators on iOS must be sideloaded and need a debugger to enable JIT. iOS 26 turned on TXM for A15/M2 and newer chips, breaking the old method; each emulator has to adapt.
- JIT tool StikDebug reached the App Store in May 2025 and was pulled in Dec 2025 when its developer account was terminated. Version 3.2.0 (Oct 30, 2026) can create pairing files on the device.
- MeloNX is the main option: rebuilt on Ryubing in Jul 2026, now at 2.7 (Oct 11, 2026). nxnative, October's viral project, is a native port, not an emulator.

As of November 2026, you can run a Switch emulator on iPhone and iPad, but only by sideloading it and enabling JIT separately. Apple opened the App Store to emulators in April 2024, but App Store apps still can't use JIT, so Switch-class emulators that need just-in-time compilation have never gotten in. iOS 26 then added TXM, which broke the old ways of turning JIT on. Here's how the last two years played out.
Why it all comes down to JIT
A Switch emulator translates the game's ARM machine code into native code while it runs. That's JIT, just-in-time compilation. iOS blocks normal apps from creating executable memory unless a debugger is attached. Apps from the App Store and TestFlight can't get that permission, which is why MeloNX's documentation says flatly that it won't run without JIT.

iOS 26 and TXM: back to square one
The day after WWDC 2025, LiveContainer developer Duy Tran said Apple had effectively killed JIT in iOS 26. The reason was TXM (Trusted Execution Monitor) on A15/M2 and newer chips: a memory page an app writes code into must first be written by a debugger before it can execute.
The community found a way through. StikDebug acts as the debugger and runs a script (the general-purpose universal.js) that prepares executable regions when the app launches. But the emulator has to change how it allocates memory, so on iOS 26 only apps their developers have adapted can get JIT. Quit the app fully and you have to authorize it again. SideStore's documentation says iOS 26 broke JIT once again and that only a handful of apps work on 26.6 and 27. MeloNX is on that list.
StikDebug: on the App Store, off again, still sideloaded
StikDebug is an on-device debugger. After the first pairing it doesn't need a computer, but it does need a pairing file and a local loopback VPN. It briefly reached the US App Store in May 2025, and 9to5Mac suggested that could free iOS Switch emulation from the computer. In December, Apple terminated the developer's account and the app was pulled. Distribution moved to sideloading and development continued. Version 3.2.0 on October 30, 2026 can create pairing files right on the device, which could remove the computer from the process entirely. Users still need to confirm how well it works.
Alternative app stores don't help
Users in the EU (under the Digital Markets Act) and in Japan (under its smartphone software competition law, in force since December 18, 2025) can use stores such as AltStore PAL. heise reported that the JIT ban covers apps in those stores too, so Switch emulators there still need StikDebug.
What this means for players
- For iPhone and iPad, start with MeloNX. An iPhone 15 Pro or newer is recommended; the system caps app memory at 6 GB. Follow the iPhone / iPad setup guide and enabling JIT with StikDebug.
- If you depend on JIT, don't rush iOS updates. Both 26.4 and 27.0 caused problems. Wait for StikDebug and MeloNX to confirm support.
- nxnative is a different route: each game becomes its own native app. It needs a Mac with Xcode and only supports A17 Pro / M1 or newer on iOS 26+. It isn't an emulator and works very differently.
- The iOS builds of Sudachi and Pomelo are dead, and Eden has no working iOS version, so treat any "Eden iOS download" with suspicion. More on the iOS platform page.
FAQ
Is there a Switch emulator on the App Store?
Not as of November 2026. Apple allows emulators, but App Store apps can't use JIT, and Switch emulators can't run without it. Be very wary of any App Store app that claims to play Switch games.
Do EU or Japanese alternative app stores solve the JIT problem?
No. heise reported that the JIT restriction applies to apps in alternative marketplaces too. AltStore PAL in the EU and Japan can install apps, but Switch emulators still need StikDebug to enable JIT.
Can you still enable JIT on iOS 26?
Yes, but only for apps whose developers have adapted them. Devices with A15/M2 or newer have TXM and need StikDebug plus a script. A12–A14 and M1 devices have no TXM, so attaching a debugger is enough. MeloNX is adapted.
Will updating to iOS 27 break MeloNX?
It might. StikDebug issue #476 (Oct 5, 2026) reported JIT failing for every app on iOS 27.0. It was closed after a maintainer said the target app had been opened first instead of being launched from StikDebug, and a similar report on Oct 26 (#491) was closed as user error. StikDebug 3.2.0's notes don't mention iOS 27, so as of Nov 4 there's no official word either way. If you rely on JIT, check StikDebug and MeloNX notes before updating.
Does nxnative need JIT?
The project doesn't say. nxnative rewrites game code ahead of time and runs it directly on Apple chips, so in principle it shouldn't need JIT, but that's not officially confirmed. It needs an iPhone 15 Pro or M1 iPad or newer on iOS 26+, plus a Mac with Xcode to build each game.
